Is it time for Ferentz to move on?

  • And how many downvotes will this thread get?

    NYCHawkeye

  • I don't think so, no.

  • I think the down votes mostly come after over-emotional reactive statements like "Fire Ferentz," "Are we getting our money's worth," etc., but it's reasonable to ask from an analytical standpoint if maybe his tenure has gone beyond its time.

I don't think KF is a bad coach at all, but I have posted that I believe he has "lost" this team. Does that mean he can't rebuild again? Not necessarily, but the reality is that for a multitude of reasons, this is a really poor squad. The game today is exactly what happens when you don't have any athletes on the DL, combined with poor play by the safeties on the back-end. Yes, we can all bring up the attrition, injuries, etc., but good coaching staffs plan ahead as best they can, and recruit accordingly. For whatever reason, the last few seasons have seen several positions stocked with players that don't appear ready for the B1G, much less Division I in general. That falls on the coaches. You can't recruit players that will take 3-4 years, if ever, to be ready, and that has been a recurring theme.

  • Two things:

1.) No. I do think this was a bowl capable team and failed to make a bowl due to coaching. I don't think Iowa will ever go to the NC game under KF (if Bill Synder can do it at KState, a coach can do it at Iowa). The thing is though, there's a lot of young talent on this team and we could have a nice run coming up. If KF leaves the program on consistent successful note, the next coach will have a great chance at bringing us to that next level. If KF leaves today, we lose our recruiting class after building 2 nice ones and having déjà vu all over again.

2.) Why do you care about downvotes? Do you really care about what random interweb people think of your opinion? Are you going to take your VOH rating with you when you die or are you leaving it to someone in your will? Does your rating impress your wife? Does it make your d*** look bigger?

If you answered yes to any of those questions I feel sorry for you and you probably shouldn't have posted this thread knowing you'd probably get downvoted. If you answer no, grab a beer put in a chew and do something manly while promising to never complain about downvotes again cause ppl that complain about downvotes wear skirts. Post what you wanna post and who gives a _____ what ppl rate you, it's your opinion and if they don't like it _____ them.

  • IMO the funny part is with just a little bit of better coaching this team wins 6 games and goes bowling. Thats on KF. Thats also just how easy this schedule is. I dont care what it ranks, its the easiest Iowa schedule Ive ever seen.

Does KF need to go? No. Even if the contract wasnt an issue, hes the man for the job.
2 things about KF drive me nuts: his stubbornness to bench players, and his total disregard of recruiting. Ive put in other posts about KF and his recruiting hatred.

I think that's a fair assessment. I think everyone in the program - from the coaches on down - has a role in Iowa being 4-7. And especially with this schedule, this has been an extremely disappointing year.

You're currently at +2 on this thread. Personally, I think everyone - coaches and players - is fair game when the team is 4-7, as long as you do so respectfully (as you've done).

fuisu, thanks for the laugh. My wife hates football, but does like the Iowa tailgates, as she has been to many (ask BBR).

Living in NYC all these (23) years does make one's skin thick and also full of sarcasm, so a few donwvotes are hardly offensive,

Last I checked, the size is still the same, but is not getting any bigger the way the BB game is going tonight.

  • I can certainly blame the coaches for our loss to CMU. But the losing streak all came about from one MSU helmet on Weisman's ankle. Point blank.

No Weisman against PSU? And that changed the dynamics of our offense. Then our 2 biggest and best OL go down within 3 plays of each other and are lost for the year. Our EXCELLENT OL becomes an AVERAGE to below average OL. What does that do? Forces our less than stellar D stay on the field longer.

    'Nuff said.

(Was interesting to hear the commentators from today's game, when one tells the other that Iowa has had 18 players drafted, and the one was just so flabbergasted by that fact. Bundle that with the players who have left either thru leaving or graduation, and the margin of error for this team was low. Its not "bad coaching"...but maybe bad recruiting.)

Nothing against Weisman, but I really don't think he's THAT much better than Bullock or Garmon to the extent that his injury cost Iowa any games. IMO, Iowa played against some below average defensive fronts in the first five games, and he - and the offensive line - really benefited from that.

Also, I've seen a lot of people say that Iowa's two best offensive linemen went down with an injury. Scherff is at least arguable, but Donnal wasn't even a regular starter until Blythe got hurt. I'd take James Ferentz or Tobin over Donnal at this point (obviously before Donnal was hurt). And while Scherff is/was definitely Iowa's best run blocker, he's not a good enough pass blocker to be a great left tackle at this point. He was playing out of position by necessity since Iowa didn't have anyone better, and I think his struggles in pass pro would have been magnified as the season progressed. I think Iowa was still bound to hit some bumps in the road up front as the opposing defensive lines improved once conference play began.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think Weisman is the 2nd coming of Bo Jackson, far from it. What he had going for him is he just ran the ball. He bulled his way, always kept his feet moving and was a nightmare for Defensive players. He was simply effective.

As for Scherff, hes still fairly young, as is all our OL, with the exception of Ferentz. His pass blocking wasn't the best, especially against the speed edge rushers, but if you can lean on the DL in run blocking play after play, and use the play action, the DL aren't as frisky at they might have been.

As for Donnal, I guess I am bit biased, but once Blythe went down, Iowa replaced a 6'3 280 lb kid with a 6'7 310 lb kid and the OL played that much better. Donnal natural position is LOT, not ROG. When Scherff got hurt, I was stunned that they did not flip him over, since he has been the back up LOT on the 2-deeps all season. The chose to bring in Nolan MacMillan who as a freshman was a Big Ten All-American at ROG to play Donnal's natural position, and left Donnal at his.

All I know is that when the 3 of them went down, so did our season. Call it what you want, but its more than just coincidence.

  • Losing the Sheriff was a big one. I mean, moving Tobin over then had to try a few different guards... And didn't have the same running game. Yes, Weisman and Sheriff were huge for this team. ...Lack of improvement or just clicking with the new O by the 5th year QB was a killer! Or is it the play calling? Which workshop did they attend to be calling passes that go short of the marker repeatedly?

And you know you're hurting on D when a true freshman from an 8-man football had to burn his rs with 5 games left. To add to the misery, the LBs are ailing.

Yeah, this team is in bad shape =( Hope they got something left for one last game.

Just meant that Bullock especially, and even Garmon as the game slows down for him, are just as dangerous as Weisman is. They all do it in different ways, but I think the end result would be pretty similar.

The injuries definitely didn't help, but Iowa had already lost to Iowa State and CMU at home, so it wasn't like this team was playing great ball at any point before the injuries. The Michigan State game was an impressive, gritty win on the road, but subsequent opponents have done a much better job of capitalizing on Iowa's weaknesses. It's definitely possible that Scherff, Donnal and/or Weisman would have made the difference against Northwestern, Indiana or Purdue, but I think it's just as possible that Iowa loses those games anyway, especially since none of them play defense.

Back to the offensive line, I thought Tobin was playing pretty well at guard. He's obviously not a tackle, so it's tough to get an accurate evaluation of him at this point. But him moving out to tackle really revealed how little quality depth Iowa had/has at guard.

Imagine if this were the 2009 team. We'd be undefeated and probably gearing to play in the national championship game if we beat Nebraska Friday. That's how easy this year's schedule is.

While many of us have blamed coaching, about the only thing Ferentz could have done differently is give players on the bench a chance to prove themselves in game situations when the starters aren't consistently playing well.
Also, the playbook needs adjustments. Dan Marino and John Elway wouldn't even look good when the average pass ATTEMPT is only a bit over 5 yards.

Next year is probably another rebuilding year. This team is probably 2 or 3 years away from competing for a division title.

I do think with different play calling, being injury-free on the o-line, and a change in a few personnel, this team was capable of making a bowl, and that's on the shoulders of the head coach.
