Iowa to Play Northwestern At Wrigley in 2014?

  • Excerpted from an article in the 2/2/13 Chicago Tribune:

After years of flirting, the Cubs and Northwestern will take their relationship to the next level Tuesday when they announce a broad partnership during a news conference at Wrigley Field.

A university source told the Tribune that while Wrigley will not be host to a football game in 2013...it's just a matter of time before NU football returns to Wrigley, given that the 2010 Northwestern-Illinois game was profitable for the Cubs and gave the Wildcats a huge marketing boost with ESPN's "College GameDay" in town.

NU athletic director Jim Phillips said after the 2010 game that there was "absolutely potential to do another. This was a wonderful event, it captured a national audience and from the responses I've received, there truly was a bowl-like atmosphere."

But the date and opponent of the next football game have yet to be determined and will depend on the pace of ballpark renovations. The cramped conditions of the 2010 game forced both teams' offenses to play to the same end zone.

Given that scheduling an October game could threaten a (Cubs) playoff schedule roflmao, the 2014 games to watch are against Iowa on Nov. 8 and Illinois on Nov. 29. Phillips also has said he would look into scheduling games at Soldier Field, but Notre Dame and Illinois already have done that. (The Illini play Washington there Sept. 14.) The NU source said the school favors Wrigley Field, calling it "unique."

What are Hawkeye fans impressions of this possibility? Is it gimmickry or good marketing?

  • It should be noted--since the reporter did not--that with Rutgers and Maryland both due to join the conference in 2014, B1G schedules are likely subject to change.

  • Stop laughing at my Cubs. I feel bad enough being a fan without needing to be mocked.

  • Bad venue for football.

Did anyone watch that NU-Illinois game a few years ago? Only one end zone was being used. They constantly stopped play and changed the direction on every other possesion.

    Was it make-it take-it?

  • Pearl Jam is playing at Wrigley this summer. Thats a guaranteed win right there.

"We (will) move the dugout top, and that would allow us to put a 12-foot perimeter around the whole field, which would satisfy the NCAA," Cubs president Crane Kenney said. "That's not an issue with enough time to work on it in advance and would be part of our renovation plan."

Wrigley Field is due to be renovated in the near future, and after completion, the dugout would be completely removable in the offseason, he said.

So there will be a big hole underneath some sheets of plywood where the underground dugout was? This sounds like a nonagreeable situation, or a catch in the back of the endzone into a brick wall. This has bad idea written all over it. If I was Northwestern (home team) and, the Cubs, or City of Chicago, or whoever owns Wrigley, this would be a no way (jmho).

You can't seriously think there would be so little precautions taken.

  • I'm picturing a wide receiver running through a wall making an over the shoulder catch ala Bump Bailey in The Natural.

  • A football game in Wrigley would reaffirm its reputation as a "hitter's ballpark."

When they played IL there two years ago and they had to switch sides of the field because the goal post were on the the back of the endzone line against the brick wall? Are you serious? I am sorry but I am against it. Back in the day when the Bears played at Wrigley, there was no Ivy brick wall and the stadium was laid out differently.

The year Eddie Hinkle caught the nice diving catch against MI at Kinnick would/could have been into a brick wall.

One example, there are many more.

Do you even half realize how padded the walls were? Rhetorical question, we all know the answer to that.
