Iowa coaching staff's Recruiter of the Year

  • On Wednesday or Thursday, I'm planning to post an article about which member of the Hawkeye coaching staff is the Recruiter of the Year for the 2013 class. Between now and then, I'd love to hear your arguments for various coaches in this thread.

  • I was going to say Woods but I can't even see where he has a recruit committed yet, Brian looks to have a solid resume of verbals under him, I dont know I am going to wait a few days to give my final opinion

Gold medals aren't really made of gold. They're made of sweat, determination, and a hard-to-find alloy called guts.

  • Brian Ferentz.

  • Not sure about this year, but Reese Morgan already has a head start on 2014's award.

Great point there, although Brian Ferentz and Kirk Ferentz also played a major role with Ross, and Kirk Ferentz did with Scheel as well.

Woods could make a late run at it. If Jones commits, he'll have him. And it seems like he's actually taken over Spearman's recruitment as well.

  • I think Johnson is also in the mix here. John Kenny is his only commit right now, but Jonathan Parker could be added to that. And while he didn't end up sticking, landing David Kenney in April was an enormous get for Iowa. And closing the deal with John Kenny so early was crucial, as Kenny really helped Iowa with the remaining targets on the board. Brian Ferentz, Woods and Johnson are probably at the top of my list right now, so these next few days will determine the outcome.

I honestly think it is a pretty even spread for all around (including next year etc.) but Reese and Brian have done the best but it seems as Johnson and Woods have been all over the world recruiting. Nice actually seeing our head coach helping out as well

Just remembered that Johnson was also the lead recruiter for Malik Rucker. I think Rucker was a nice get, and closing the deal so early in the process against a quality offer list is very impressive. And Rucker has also played a key role in helping recruit other players in this class.

Great points all around here. While there is a lead recruiter for each prospect, it's hardly ever just a one-man show in terms of who is recruiting a kid.

  • I am witholding judgement on this for about 4 yrs. Not sure anyone is worthy of top recuiter until there are some results. Not nearly as 'up' as I was last yr.

That's fair, as you never know for sure how each recruit will pan out. Based on what we know now about this class, which coach do you think has been the most valuable recruiter? I ask that with the full realization that your opinion may change over the coming years as we see how each player pans out.

I agree with this. Welsh, Warfield, and Gressel will all be big time players for the hawks.

Throw LeShun Daniels in there as well as one of Ferentz's commits.

What do you guys think about Eric Johnson for this? He was the lead recruiter for John Kenny, Andre Harris, Malik Rucker and Jonathan Parker (who may come into the fold within the next 24 hours). He was also the lead recruiter for David Kenney, and Iowa likely would have kept him if it hadn't been for a unique situation.

Good point, forgot Ferentz was the lead for Daniels.

  • Just like in football, everything has to be a team effort, including recruiting, IMHO. Sure, you can have the guys who make initial and continued contact, but doesn't the whole staff enter in when convincing them Iowa is the place to go, especially during a visit? What about facilities, campus, curriculum, location, tradition, reputation, odds of success, etc. all come into play? Not a one-man show in my opinion, although the lead guy is very important in his establishing a personal relationship with a potential recruit. The rest of the team has to help carry it from there to a sealed deal.

I completely agree with you. In many cases, the school/program sells itself. And, like you said, it typically isn't just one coach that's in contact with him. I think it goes on a case-by-case basis. Sometimes, there's one coach that communicates with the recruit 95% of the time. In other situations, there may be up to four different coaches, including Kirk Ferentz, that are in regular contact with a recruit. And even if there's one main lead recruiter, it's still a team effort when the kid is visiting, as a lot goes on behind the scenes to make sure the program puts its best foot forward. And then, like you said, the players are absolutely crucial as well.
