I refuse to watch anymore phony referee determined games of any sort. Too bad Bobby Knight didn't hit Valantie in the head with that chair many years ago.

maybe enough griping will send him packing like Jim Bain, and the outback bowl ref (Barry Anderson).

C'mon, MT. Don't use the ref excuse. We got outcoached, nothing more, nothing less.

  • To the Spartans coming over to this board, I am curious to know what you all thought of the officiating. Do we all have our black and gold shades on, or was this game just terribly refereed (both sides)?

Not looking for an argument, I just can't believe the inconsistency.

I would say that is was poorly officiated both ways at times. We are used to TV Teddy Valentine officiating our games though so we are used to it. Sometimes he calls fouls when guys look at each other and other times he allows UFC style takedowns with no call. He is horribly inconsistent. Has been that way in the Big Ten all season in my opinion.

There were times in the game that bodies were all over the floor and I'm thinking "Ok there has to be a foul there. I don't know on who, but something wasn't legal there...". He also has a tendency to watch a shot and if it doesn't go in then he blows the whistle which is unbelievably frustrating. Valentine just sucks at his job.

B1G refs sucked. Not a consistent call all night. There were bad calls on both sides. I died when they didn't call a foul on Nix when he was up in the air and clobbered the shooter. Worst refs in the country. With that being said we had a "Hambuglar win. Still tasty".

  • In the first half I felt like the refs (especially Valentine) were calling the game in favor of Iowa. We were thinking it was a big10 order so the conference would get another team in the tournament. Then the 2nd half just came out and was called completely different imo. I definitely thought msu was getting the majority of the calls in the 2nd half. We all hate valentine though. That will never change.

I wasn't watching extremely closely, but I do remember some questionable calls going both ways. I don't like the level of physicality allowed in basketball today as it makes calls more subject to the referee's current whim than to a rulebook, but I doubt that will change any time soon.

  • Thanks for the insight. I don't know enough about Valentine, but I can see that his reputation is well below par. It's a shame that the B1G employs this quality of officiating.

We all have a burning hatred for TV Teddy. It's gotten to the point where he could save Tom Izzo from a burning building, and we still wouldn't excuse any of his atrocious calls and posturing for the cameras.

heard that too - i'm more than disappointed with the way that the refs seem to let msu go all thug when they are trailing. happened today too with the izzo maulers - btw

not basketball - and if hockey is wanted on the basketball court then all teams need to know this when they recruit. sucks for the B1G.

  • Seriously, why does the Big Ten office keep Valentine and Hightower as officials? The entire Big Ten fanbase dislikes them. Is it for the controversy?
