Impressive speech by Paul Rhoads to a class at ISU

  • For those that are interested, here's a speech Paul Rhoads gave to a class at Iowa State about building team unity when he took over in Ames.

Paul Rhoads tells the story behind the 'So Proud!' speech

  • Don't know why Todd's being downvoted for this, I know I have a lot of respect for Paul Rhodes and I think Iowa would be lucky to have a guy like him with our program. Obviously no disrespect to our current coaches because by all signs point to us having a very classy staff, but Paul Rhodes should also be respected as a great representative of our state.

Yeah, I would think most Iowa fans would be interested to hear a rival coach speak in a nontraditional setting.

  • Rhodes has always impressed me as being much like our beloved KF. You can't help but like him, even if he is a Clone. I always want them to do well if Iowa has beaten them each of the last 15 years.

Clones are on the rise with Rhodes. They are going to be very tough in the years ahead as long as he stays there, and I believe he will be there a LONG time!

    +1 Completely agree here.

  • I like Rhodes a lot as a coach and person, I would like him more if he weren't at ISU but the guy cares deeply for his players and is a great motivator, and I respect that in the cut throat world of college football, If Kirk were not here I would take hI'm in a second. He is a class act, only downfall is he is a clone.

  • Wow they put that speech in an images of the decade video? I guess I didn't realize that speech was so popular nationally.

  • I will downvote anything that promotes ISU on an Iowa website.

This is a HAWKEYE website. Its bad enough that FISH is a closet clone and now Todd posting ISU garbage.

    "I am so proud"

    Is the camera on me?

    "To be your coach"

Is the camera still on me?

Its a lame speech and he makes eye contact with the camera.

Whats next an interview with Pollard on why he put up the This Is Cyclone Country sign in CR?

Child please. Think Bama has Auburn censored on their site? O$U has Hoke's speeches?

ISU is our rival. I have no time for them. I hope they get smoked today in BBall and dont make the tourney. I hope their wrestling team stays in the dumps with their newly extended contract joke of a coach. I hope Paul Rhoads goes on a sideline rant next year and breaks his leg during one of his monkey moves.

Your either a Hawkeye or a clone. Cant be both. Cant root for both. Cant win with it. Cant do it.

No one is promoting anything here. Personally, I think it's interesting to hear any high level coach speak, especially when it's in a nontraditional setting like this was. Doesn't matter where he's from - Oregon, Arizona, Iowa State, Rutgers, etc. Also, he talks about having pride in being from the state of Iowa, and a lot of people here can relate to that. Lastly, a lot of people find it interesting to get some insight into a rival program. And FYI, I've seen multiple Brady Hoke speeches on the Ohio State site, and multiple Urban Meyer speeches on the Michigan site. Just listening to someone speak doesn't make you a fan of that program and doesn't mean you're promoting that program.

This video was posted on footballscoop, which in case you're not familiar with it, is an extremely popular site that is viewed by just about every college coach in the country on a regular basis. I would assume at least some of Iowa's coaches, Oklahoma State's coaches, Texas Tech's coaches, etc watched this video, and none of them are Iowa State fans either.

Respecting your opponents doesn't necessarily imply that you as a fan are somehow supporting them or rooting for them. There are numerous analogies. For instance, I may be a diehard Packer fan, but there have been several Bears players and coaches over the years which have earned my respect: Payton, Urlacher, Hampton, Singletary, etc., just to name a few. Magic Johnson and Larry Bird have a tremendous amount of respect for each other.

Rhodes to me comes across as a class act, and by all accounts is a well-respected coach. I respect the guy, but it doesn't mean I don't want the Hawks to kick his a$$ every year.

    DieHardHawk

  • Most Iowa fans I've talked to (even those who hate ISU) have a great amount of respect for both Rhoads and Hoiberg. Both guys are Iowa guys and are always classy.

  • Also, I've never subscribed to the notion that to be a "true" Iowa fan you have to hate Iowa State. I have no ill will towards them and will pull for them unless they play Iowa (duh). Does this make me less of a Hawkeye fan than someone who blasts Iowa State at every opportunity? IMO, no.

Yes, but in all reality you don't live here and I don't know how long it has been since you lived here, but when you have to listen to the cyclones bullcensored at work, on line out with your friends everywhere you go basically it is hard to like them, Iowa State as a whole may not bother me that much, I respect Rhoads and Jackson and Bill F. but the fact their fan base is the biggest d bags I know, it makes it hard for me to not hate them. But you, oh you Fishy live out in the land of the chili and don't have to listen to it on a daily basis. Not to mention the fact I am the ONLY Hawkeye fan in my family so I really do have to listen to it all the time.

Oh absolutely. I imagine the proportion of Iowa fans who don't mind ISU is much greater among the out-of-staters as opposed to people in Iowa.
