I'm sick of unsupervised Big Ten referees.

  • I watched a couple of games today. The inconsistencies are not coincidental . They are a lack of supervision for officials.

If it is supposed to be the extended football season, why not get rid of the guards and recruit more linebackers for the BB team?

I'm about ready to cancel my BTN subscription. I'm that disgusted.

No takers huh? Don't blame you, it is a sensitive topic. It questions the very core of the way the world of athletics conducts it's business.

I'm still going to cancel BTN.

  • There should be a progress grade report of each referee for all the games so that way they can be accountable for "mistakes." An outside panel of three to rate the referees' calls on all the game, they have enough money but they don't want a fair game, they like to manage them accordingly...

  • Before you claim this is a "Big Ten referees" problem, be aware that college basketball officials don't work exclusively for one conference. They work regionally, so there tends to be some conference overlap, but it is far from exclusive. For instance, famed official Ed Hightower has officiated 11 games in the last 30 days, but only 4 of those have been Big Ten games. You'll see similar ratios with most refs in most conferences. An increase in poor officiating in recent years is really a nation-wide issue and not a Big Ten-centric problem.

  • How do you just cancel BTN?

  • Personally, I think the officiating in college basketball is exponentially better than it is in the NBA. At least in college games, if there's a bad call, you generally get the feeling that the refs just made an honest mistake. In the NBA, it's often much more suspicious.

Agree. College referees are much better than NBA's. There have been a lot of complaints about the refs on this site this year (and I'm not talking about MT's post here at all)! I think most of the criticism (especially in regards to calls against the Hawks) have been unjustified stemming from frustration with our team's performance.

BTW, I'm really angry about our first half against Indiana. For a moment I had horrifying flashbacks of Lick's years at Iowa!!!

  • I thought the officiating toward Zeller last night was awful. After the first few I started watching each in slow motion and most of the time there was absolutely no contact at all. Whenever he gets the ball under the basket he purposely jumps towards the baseline to make it look like he got pushed and he gets the call every time. Do officials not watch game tape to see they are getting fooled. I would think he would get no benefit of the doubt after his famous, "he just broke my junk flop".

Does any one know the website that tracks officials performance? Someone posted it on HawkCentral a few years ago.

  • Cos, you forgot that Zeller also played LB on Clemmons when he tried to break away, a foul or yellow card was missed on that momentum swing.

  • I think the only thing that really frustrates me about how college basketball is officiated, is the amount of ticky tack fouls under the hoop compared to the mugging that is sometimes allowed to happen to PG's as they get to half court. The lane is traditionally a more contact zone than outside the 3 line where PG's are setting up an offense. That's the reason scoring is so low this year, offenses can't get a rhythm going.

Unless you cancel a whole sport package/tier/whatever they're called, I don't think you can get rid of just one channel.

  • I've made some comments about officiating this year, especially in Iowa games. However, it's not just Iowa games. it's prevalent throughout college basketball., Horrible officiating has been a headline this season. The way the game was officiated in Bloomington on Saturday was pathetic. The officials made it impossible to watch.

  • KC the second half was a joke. It became a free throw contest with so many fouls being called. It was like someone realized the Iowa /Indiana game shouldn't be a 50-40 contest. Hmmmmm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
