Hoops Report 2012

  • While we rather impatiently wait for the start of Football Saturdays, how about some Hoops chat?

Who do you see as the starting 5, by the time the UNI & ISU contests in December.
    Here's my best guess.

    PG: Mike Gesell, A Clemmons
    SG: Josh Ogelsby, Devyn Marble
    3: Devyn Marble, Eric May
    4: Aaron White, Zach McCabe,
5: Mel Basabe, Zach McCabe, Adam Woodbury,

    What say you?

I just don't see how you keep that beautiful stroke of Ogelsby's off the floor.
There is going to be some real Fights for PT, with this squad.
    A very good thing!

I agree with you, KK. I put Woodbury in there because of size. Marble will start. Gessell may be the guy coming off the bench if Oglesby starts. From the news of summer play and how Gessell has done in recent history, he may be the "floor general" for this team.

  • PG: Gesell, Clemmons
    SG: Marble, Oglesby
    SF: White, Marble
    PF: McCabe, Basabe
    C: Olaseni/Woodbury

The only one I'm not sure of is center.

  • I think you can figure on experience starting before altitude. Figure Olaseni. Woodbury will get plenty of PT, but not the start. violin

Kind of what I was thinking. Maybe as the season progresses Woody will start but early on I see him coming off the bench.

  • Gesell
    Marble
    White
Basabe/McCabe (similar minutes - therefore starting won't bmean much)
Olaseni with Woodbury off the bench.

  • This again? I swear you started one of these already... but I'll play now that the PTL is over.

    PG: Mike Gesell, A Clemmons
    SG: Devyn Marble, Oglesby
    3: White, Eric May
    4: Basabe/McCabe, Meyer
    5: Adam Woodbury, Olaseni, Meyer

Looks like Ingram will be the odd man out. Hope he will rs. Even though I know he's a great defender. But if Basabe and McCabe don't stay out of foul trouble, then, Ingram will be needed. White slides to 4 and Ingram to 3. Though, with McCabe not playing Center, his foul number would go down. Well, a 11-men rotation would help too =)

Oglesby won't start. He's like a Jeff Moe. And that's not a bad thing.

That is a deep line up folks. me likey.

...Olaseni starting over Woody? Maybe the first 3-5 games.

  • The great thing about the recruiting job Fran and his staff have done is that the Hawkeyes should have some legit competition for playing time throughout the season. Not only should that bring more overall depth, but it should raise everyone's level of play as well. I would assume that as few as possible of the freshmen will start at the beginning of the season, but I'd love to see a few of them earn a job by the end of the season.

  • i'll guess that coach will give the car keys to gessell right off the bat. some coaches would wait until december, but i bet fran isn't one of them. if the returning "starter", marble, was a natural pg, i'd call it differently. i recall that ronny lester didn't start on day one, but the hawks had a returnee in beau hairston and at that point in his career lute was pretty conservative. i don't know that gessell has ronny lester's game, but he's probably more prepared to start instantly. i also think the guys expect him to--and that's a factor, too.

i'm less certain about the woodbury/olesani pairing. even tho gabe has been here a year, a.w. might be the more experienced player--he's played longer, at least. surely both will play plenty. i'll guess, aw--unless he turns out to be a fouling machine this first year.

how about red shirts? there might be some candidates. meyer?? lots of coaches might have red shirted olesani last year--so maybe fran is a fan of keeping the line moving.

  • Silver......considering how little depth that the Iowa BB program has had, over the past 4-5 years, it will really be
refreshing and kind of an 'embarrasment of riches' for Fran in 2012.

Yes, I think it is a distinct possibility, that because of the Front court bodies, (Basabe, White, McCabe, Olaseni, Woody) that Kyle Meyer could be Redshirted.

Then, in 2013, you would have Kyle and Jarrod Uthoff coming in to bolster the depth again.

Who in the **** is Ingram?

Is Michael Ingrahm from Tom Davis era still got a year of eligibility?
Or, did we sign Bobby Engram's son, unbeknownst to Hawkeyedom?

Incoming freshman Patrick Ingram. From Indianapolis. He was unable to play in the PTL.

  • From HC last August:

Saying it was “always one of my dreams” to play in the Big Ten Conference, North Central High School senior guard Patrick Ingram committed to the University of Iowa on Wednesday at his school.

The 6-2 Ingram, who visited the Iowa City campus for the first time on Monday, picked the Hawkeyes over offers from Loyola (Ill.) and Saint Louis, his two other finalists.

“(Iowa coach Fran McCaffery) and the assistants really laid everything out for us when we were there,” said Ingram, who averaged 10 points a game as a junior. “It’s always been a goal of mine to play in the Big Ten, so when they called and offered (in July) I was really excited.”

Iowa was 11-20 overall last season and 4-14 in the Big Ten, ahead of only last-place Indiana. Being part of a rebuilding process appealed to Ingram, who was told by the staff that he would have a chance to play his way into early minutes. Other recruits in Iowa’s 2012 class are Kyle Meyer, a 6-10 forward from Georgia, and Mike Gesell, a 6-1 guard from South Sioux City, Neb.

Ingram played a key role on North Central’s Class 4A state championship team as a sophomore and has been playing varsity ball since his freshman year, when the earned the nickname “Motor Man” from coach Doug Mitchell.

“He had three great choices,” Mitchell said. “The thing I like is that Iowa saw that he’s a heck of a player even through he might not be ranked as top-50 or top-100 player on some of these lists. He’s going to do a great job for them.”

Playing in the Big Ten, Ingram will face his high school teammate and classmate, Ronnie Johnson, who is headed to Purdue. His older brother, Terone Johnson, is also a former North Central teammate and will be a sophomore at Purdue.

“It will be fun to play against them,” Ingram said. “I’m sure we’ll joke around a little before the games, but we’re all competitors and will want to beat each other.”

he played some. he had knee tendonitis early.

  • With McCabe saying he has been told to concentrate on the forward position I have to believe that either Gabe or Adam will be the starter at center to start the season. I think like everyone else I would go Gessell, Marble, White, McCabe, and Gabe. I also think Fran might go by match ups with either Basabe or Oglsby starting or playing big minutes depending on whether they want to go big or small.

  • Meyer played. He was on the team with Basabe and Cole originally so he didn't get to play much. They're good as well so he was traded to the last place team- White, May and Clemons. He blossomed once he got to start.

Ingram is a defensive stopper/sparkplug. Will be hard to rs him. But I think he and Meyer are good candidates. One of them will anyway.
http://hawkcentral.com/2012/04/09/iowa-signee-ingram-selected-for-indiana-kentucky-all-star-games/ Fran was high on him the first time he saw him played.

  • Gesell, Clemmons
    Marble, Oglesby
    White, May,
    Basabe, McCabe
    Woodbury, Oleseni, Meyer

This will be the line-up halfway through the season. Gesell will start from day 1.

I think that Ingram will be seeing some time in games. Probably not a lot, but certainly some. With Oglesby, Gesell, and Marble the only other options to play the 2 spot, I see Ingram getting some time. He plays a lot bigger than his size at 6'3 so you could see him running in a small lineup and going for boards and being used for defense. His offensive game isn't that bad, its just not as developed as his defense.

  • And I really think Olaseni will start over Woodbury. At least for a good portion of the season. There are a ton of articles out there saying Olaseni has developed really well and is ready to show what he can do. I don't have big expectations out of Woodbury this year.

  • Anyone able to think of the last Hawkeye scholarship player to red shirt?

One would think Meyer would be a good candidate because of the depth at the 4 and 5, not sure about Ingram since most of us haven't seen him yet. Both may still depend on preseason injuries.
