  • Very interesting. He sounds like he could be a pretty good prospect

  • Wow - that's a nice surprise to get in the middle of a sluggish work day. Nothing against Nic, but I got super excited when I saw EJ's tweet, because it came at the same time I say that Cody Thomas (the only QB from Texas that we had offered prior to today) had committed - it wasn't until a few minutes later that I saw that Cody had committed to Oklahoma. Never-the-less I'm super pumped to learn more about Nic. His numbers are stupid - he'd be in the Iowa highschool hall of fame as a junior with those type of numbers.

Todd, was Nic on your radar at all prior to today?

  • Not his highlight tape but this sometimes can be better...shows more of the overall game, when things are not ideal. So I will hold off on my thoughts about his game. Interesting that they play in a shotgun, 3 and 4 wide spread system. Cuz...I found this quote to be very interesting...

"Iowa is going in a different direction (offensively), and he's excited to be on the bottom ground of that"

  • i found these highlights on Nic. My impressions:

    1) Outstanding accuracy
    2) Smooth delivery - can be fairly quick when needed
    3) Good pocket awareness
    4) I never saw him take a snap from under center so he will have to adjust to that - however we don't know how much GD will ask his QBs to go under center.
    5) Seems physically mature for highschool junior

Actually he reminds me a lot of C.J. Beathard. I'm super pumped to see how he is able to grow and develop between now and his freshmen year. If he redshirts, which is likely, he could be a beast.

He really wasn't on my radar, to be honest. Iowa just recently got in touch with him, and the offer obviously just came through today.

  • He seems to be a stud in basketball(had schools looking at him) and baseball(pitched a no hitter)....... 37TD's to 3INTS also is pretty impressive

  • I wonder why he wasn't more highly recruited. 38 TDs and 3 INTs in the state of Texas should land you plenty of looks from major programs you would think....shrug

  • Would love to hear more of the behind the scenes stuff with Shimonek's recruitment. Sounds like someone knew about him and tipped him off to the staff.

I like what you saw in him too. Honestly, I have not seen a slower QB that defensive players had a harder time tackling since Dan Marino. And in the video you put up, you can see too many back-footed throws. But the kid has got a live arm and can throw with touch. This could be interesting.

  • What kind of competition does he play against?

  • After watching his video, I thought, great accuracy, decision-making, poise in the pocket, escapability, but, whoa, that arm strength is suspect and he seems to sling the ball. I'm wondering if Iowa really needed to offer yet. There will definitely be some working on mechanics with this kid, but he appears to be a great athlete.

They play at the 2A level, so that may be a part of it. On the other hand, they did make the state-semis. From what his parents and coach told me, some of the bigger schools were starting to warm up to him.

I would assume Coach Davis found out about him via his contacts within Texas. It all came together very quickly.

They're a 2A school, which is the second smallest division in Texas. However, they did make it to the state semifinals.

  • One thing I really like about Nic is his feel for the game as a passer. The object of throwing a pass is to complete it, and give your receiver a chance to do something with the ball after the catch. Too often, especially with young QB's with strong arms, they try to knock over the receiver on every pass to show off their arm strength. Vandenberg actually struggles with this frequently. I like how Nic knows when he needs to throw his fastball, but he also recognizes when he can take something off it and make sure the receiver can make a play.

  • Todd, thanks for your insight. However, you didn't notice that he had trouble having zip on his ball on some of his deep passes where arm strength was necessary? The ball got there and with the right timing but it appeared to wobble, and these were highlights. Same problem with Stanzi I agree even to this day. There are times at the college level where I worry he won't get away with that. He's a pitcher so maybe he's got the strength.

He may improve his velocity once his mechanics have been cleaned up a bit.
