Hawkeyes headed to NIT

  • Unable to hold on to 16 point halftime lead vs the 2nd worst team in the conference.....grumble

  • Led 41-22 at one point in the game. How such a meltdown could happen, I just don't get it.

Nebraska is not good. So disappointing they blew it. It will be interesting to see Fran's post game presser. Losses like this with what was at stake is unacceptable

  • Definitely a crushing loss for Iowa today, but unfortunately, inconsistent performances often come with the territory with young teams like this. To make the Big Dance, I think Iowa has to either win out to finish 10-8, or finish 9-9 and make it to the B1G tourney title game. If the former happens, Iowa is close to a lock for the tournament. With the latter, I think it'd be 50-50.

  • idk todd, we're 4/5 of the way thru the season and its not like we're playing all frosh.....this team has a nice mix of youth and veterans....i'm laying this catastrophe squarely in the lap of Fran....zero adjustments vs a poor opponent....guess the next four games and btt will show us what we have as a coach

I'm just trying to stay positive because the future is bright. So many heart breakers this season not being able to close out. I'm as pissed as anyone, but the pieces are in place and Hawk bball is back. cheers

I am pretty sure that if JO was 2-3 years younger, he wouldn't even be at IOWA. As to the OP, the NIT is all we deserve given the inability to close out games.

honestly, i'm not so sure that the pieces are in place if we're taking about a team able to challenge for a top three finish in the league. iowa has a roster with 8-10 guys who're pretty good or good. each has some strengths and weaknesses. playing in the b10 where some teams are loaded with very good and excellent players, the hawks are on a path toward becoming an nit fixture unless fran can recruit over the current roster with a couple of game changing players. good freshmen can mature into very good seniors, but seldom excellent ones. the skewed distribution of scholarships across the classes makes the recruiting challeng greater--unless there's some attrition from the bottom of the roster.

  • This team and head coach is really bad.

Almost worse than KF and football when it comes to holding a lead.

NIT is a possibility, but don't count on it.

Welcome to Voice of the Hawkeyes! We're glad you're here, so make yourself at home.

    welcome

And you're right that Oglesby has definitely struggled. If he could ever find his rhythm, it'd make Iowa that much tougher to beat.

Not acceptable and what gets me is that there are people on this board who find this acceptable.

I agree that the entire program - from the head coach and down - needs to be accountable for today's loss. But especially in college basketball, even great teams will have bad losses from time to time. Miami (FL) lost to Florida Gulf Coast earlier this year by 12, and a below .500 Wake Forest squad by 15 today, and they're still in the mix for a number one seed.

As for the NIT, Iowa is currently 17-10 and 6-8, with four conference games remaining, and then at least one B1G tourney game. Even if the bottom falls out and Iowa loses its next five games, I still think the NIT would be a possibility with an overall record over .500 and given the strength of the B1G this year. And while today's loss was very disappointing, I think most people would be surprised to see Iowa lose its next five games.

  • This loss and the one to VT will keep us out of the NCAA, unless we win at Indiana and/or make the final game of the conference tournament,

And miracles don't seem to happen in Iowa BB -- the only one I recall is coming back from a big deficit and beating Georgetown in the East regional final back in 1980.

The 2001 conference tournament championship was somewhat of a miracle but the NCAA the next week was a big bust.

  • NIT is just a possibility? Teams don't go from NCAA bubble to NIT bubble with one loss. Sorry if that disrupts your riot, but its true. This is an NIT team and would be an NCAA team if they could close out games, something that comes with experience. Teams that rely on a lot of underclassmen will struggle down the stretch of games. Next year, when our boys are a year stronger and smarter, you'll see some of the close games tip in the Hawkeyes' favor, leading to an NCAA tournament berth.

All along people were saying this was a borderline NCAA team with the odds being an NIT bid. Melting down over a team meeting expectations doesn't make much sense to me. Just my opinion. cheers
