Beathard and Sokol are two huge picks up for QB IMO. Canzeri has played as a true fresh, Grant helped recruit & finish that class, Hamilton is a future stud, Dibona has played a bunch, Bigach plays a ton, Daniel played, Bruce Davis best MLB last year that didn't play IMO & contributed on SPT & D before injury, Stanzi is in the NFL and 0 losses in bowl games, Spievey in NFL, DJK set records at Iowa
Sorry to tell ya but if you look up KOK's recruits and compare them to rest of the coordinators I bet he fairs in the middle. Sure he wasn't EJ or Erb but obliviously he did more than Norm or Ferentz.

Thanks a ton for coming over and sharing your insight! I've been pretty curious about this possible hire, but I'm glad we have someone who's followed the program over the years to give us some insight onto how adaptive he was to the players he was given. Out of curiosity, do you know anything about the rumors where Davis has had a habit of favoring certain players?

Glad to come over and contribute to the conversation. I don't know of any situation where it was said or eluded too that Davis favored any one player over another. I can tell you that's not why he was let go. What's interesting is that under Davis, Texas had some of the best offensive units in the country with the likes of Young and McCoy under center and we got used to putting up 42+ points a game and throwing for over 400+ passing yards in our victories. For a time, if the team didn't put up those kinds of numbers, the fan base would question whether something was wrong with the offense. Davis was constantly under a microscope, because at Texas, many of our fans I believe fell in to the same trap that the coaches and players did with respect to entitlement. We had a bar that was set so high after the 2005 championship that Davis virtually couldn't win even when the team won games. People questioned whether he could lead an offense without Vince to another National Championship game. He was one play away in 2008 from taking a team to what would have most certainly been a second BCS title game appearance and succeeded in 2009, leading the offense with Colt McCoy at the helm to a title game against Alabama, where unfortunately, McCoy was knocked out of the game in the first series. Davis took some heat in that game as well for that particular play call, even when the team battled back in the 4th qtr with a chance to win the game with a true freshmen QB who had never seen the playing field on Saturday’s.
What hurt Texas (and this is one of the reasons Mack made the change) is that we became too pass heavy with respect to our scheme and when McCoy went down against Bama, we were doomed, because we virtually had no running game to rely on. We became too one dimensional and as a result, it cost us a second national championship under Coach Brown. Many felt that Mack may have even retired after that game had he won, as Will Muschamp was to be Mack’s replacement at that time. Mack tried in 2010 to force the issue and move back to a more balanced attack, but it was clear that we didn't have the personnel or the coaches in place to make that happen. For this, and some of the other issues I mentioned in previous posts, Texas suffered its worst year in the Mack Brown era. That stark contrast is what set the waves in motion for change. The pressure was on Mack at the conclusion of the 2010 season to hand out the pink slips to several coaches and begin to right the wrongs of the past. I think at most places, Davis would have survived, but the anger and frustration was so high at Texas after that season that Mack had no choice but to go in a different direction.
You’re going to have the “haters” on boards about Davis, but most fans who have watched Texas football over the years, as well as columnists, who write about Texas football will give Davis the credit that he deserves. I would certainly turn to people like Mr. Burton, Kirk Bohls and Alan Trubow who have covered Texas football for many years. Yes, Davis had some bad days at the office in terms of playcalling, as most coaches do, but there can be no denying that under his watch, Texas had some of the most prolific offensive teams in its history. I hope he gets the job, because he deserves another opportunity and most Texas fans will be glad to see it in my opinion.
Good luck!
