  • Is the OC talk for the former Texas OC legit talk, or is it just rumor right now? I've seen a lot of chatter between sites, but nothing confirmed.

Anyone here have any concrete information?

  • I've heard his name being mention but I'm still betting on Soup.

  • I like Soup but that would be a let down if GD's name was floating around, especially after the PP hire.

He certainly brings a lot of experience. He's been a head coach at Tulane & was OC at Texas for a long time. I like the idea of the recruits he could snag from the high school coaches he knows of in Texas but.....

    I'm still betting on Soup.

  • From those I've talked to, greg davis is the top guy right now. tom moore declined. Alot of people aren't thrilled with Davis, but time will tell. Marc morehouse is right about 99% of the time and seems to think it's davis.

  • KCHAwk: the "alot of people" that aren't thrilled with Davis.......are you referring to message board fans? People from Texas? or some of the people within the Iowa team structure? just curious.

Good luck with that one, Greg Davis doesn't recruit.

Do you care to go into further detail? If you mean he didn't have to recruit before then I agree, at Texas the players recruit the school. I'm sure he will have to do more recruiting at Iowa if he is named the OC. Although Ferentz himself has said he would like to keep his coordinators off the road. O'Keefe traveled and recruited though.

  • To clarify:

Every coach on staff recruits, I don't mean he never actually did any recruiting duties. Greg Davis had a recruiting area he was responsible for like every other coach.

What I mean is that he was not one of the "recruiters" on staff, hitting the road constantly, beating the bushes, hours of HS film, hours of talking and building relationships with HS coaches, etc. Besides being responsible for his area, he was not one of the coaches put in charge of a recruitment of high profile guys, and he was never one of the Texas coaches seen at high schools and games with any regularity.

Positional coaches beat the bushes, Mack Brown was the closer. Greg Davis took a backseat.

Bobby Burton of our Texas site was the first person in the media to report this. He's got some great sources, and stated that Davis was the front-runner to land the position.

Thank You for the explanation, Sounds like he may have a similar kind of roll with Iowa if he gets the job. Either way, Recruiting at Texas is VASTLY different than Iowa. Texas coaches rarely leave the state, and I don't think they are beating the bushes either. They have D-1 kids literally coming out of their censored.

    Boonerhawk

  • Yes in Texas you can dern near throw a rock in any direction and hit a d-1 recruit.

Thanks. I also read your later comment on why he doesn't recruit. Personally if he were to come to Iowa I hope he gets on the road if he's against that I don't want him.

I heard some people say that he was run off at Texas cause he was lazy. People are saying he had a lot of talent and really didn't impress with it offensively. Vince Young was a fluke year..... yadayadayda etc.

Some ppl like the idea of a big name guy others will whine cause that's what they do.

Agree with this. We need this guy at the very least to go out and recruit the QB position. He much like Soup has coached quite a few NFL caliber players and that usually resonates with recruits of that position.

  • Being a resident of Austin for the past 10 years I don't think I've heard more than 2 compliments about Davis. Granted, Longhorn fans are as delusional as they get, but they absolutely hate him. I don't follow the Horns, so I don't have much of an opinion. Saw this pic on another site. Kinda funny.

I'm told former Texas asst Greg Davis has taken Iowa OC job; 247's Bobby Burton first mentioned Iowa's interest in GD. #ut

Just some of the people I know with ins to the program. They just weren't sure he was the best fit. He definitely has the experience, they just weren't sure how much of Texas's success was because of him. I guess we'll find out.

"Expectations. 9-3 at Iowa gets you a prime seat on the float at the Corn Syrup Makes Our Lives Better Parade right next to the obesity interpretative displays. 9-3 at Texas gets you called a motherf****r at the checkout line at Whole Foods"

    Now that is hilarious.

  • Hope Davis can conform to Iowa. He doesn't have the talent to work with like he did at Texas. Also, hope he can recruit.

    Bigskyhawk

  • Hey Todd, you think you could get someone from 247 Texas to fill us in on his recruiting power down there? This could def be a nice start to getting more Texas guys right?
