Future Hawkeye Peter Jok named Mr. Iowa Basketball

  • Peter Jok of West Des Moines Valley has been named Mr. Iowa Basketball.

Jok, a 6-foot-6 senior guard, averaged 23.6 points a game while earning Des Moines Sunday Register Class 4-A first-team all-state honors.

The Iowa recruit made 43 percent of his 3-point goals (he hit 56). He also made 92.6 percent of his free throws (126-for-136). The selection was made by the Iowa Newspaper Association.

  • Fran is keeping the IA talents in state and making IA relevant again.

    LaoHawk

  • While I'm certainly happy for Peter Jok and the Hawkeyes getting his talents,
I'm really hoping that ignoring the obvious talent of
Jeremy Morgan (2 state titles and State tourney MVP), as well as
Wyatt Lohaus (2 state titles and best player in state championship game) does not come back to
    bite the Hawkeyes.

Could smooth this over by getting young Wyatt, a junior to rethink his verbal &
take a look at being on the BigTen network all 4 years.

  • Congrats to Jok for being Iowa's Mr Basketball...thank God UNI didn't get him too. biggrin

Jok has a much higher ceiling I think then both Morgan and Lohaus. I think Morgan ends up being pretty good at UNI, but I'm not sold on Lohaus yet. I don't know if he's athletic enough to play the point at UNI.

  • Buck- you're taking Sky's job? =)

Sky- uhhh, 1 scholly available. Do you want Jok or Morgan? I guess I'll take the guy that just won the player of the year award whose shooting % is uhh... pretty impressive. As for Lohaus, he can go to Wisc and be one of those weaker Bohannons. If he grows 2 more inches and can shoot 40+ % on the 3s... and can improve some quickness this next year then, maybe Fran will take a look =). Oh, just let's see how life will be for him without Morgan and Dondre.

    Ohiohawk- gotcha =)

Good Lord, Lohaus has been a leader and top player on back-to-back State Champs, with a
52 game winning streak. If that isn't enough to convince certain 'eggsperts' here, well then
    there is simply no hope.

Uhhhh- Meeester Thai..........I didn't see Peter J in either of the past 2 years state championship games, but
we did see Wyatt Lohaus outscore an undefeated Bettendorf team for half the game.

Perhaps you should get someone to edit your posts, before hitting reply?

First of all, as an 'eggspert'...I can tell you, generically speaking, that no matter how well a kid does playing HIGH SCHOOL BALL, it does not automatically correlate to COLLEGE BALL. The athletes are far superior on a college floor than you will find on any high school court.

Peter Jok may have not been in the past two state championship games, but that is not entirely because of him, as you suggest. It is still a TEAM GAME. He is still one piece of the puzzle. And yeah, Lohaus outscored Bettendorf 14-13 in the first half. Did he guard all 5 players on the floor all by himself? Its a team game, and West was loaded.

Now I think Lohaus is gonna have a nice college career. Hes a good player. HE'S NOT AS GOOD AS JOK. And that, by God is whose coming to Iowa. So get over it.

  • Simply put, Lohaus can't carry his Jok strap, p.s I don't really know but just thought it would be fun to say that, I am happy Jok is a Hawk though

Gold medals aren't really made of gold. They're made of sweat, determination, and a hard-to-find alloy called guts.

    roflmao thanks...

Ohio, why bother. Allow me. Morgan is the better player on the West. Tall/lanky, can shoot and can bring the ball down. Jok can do those things... even better. Do the math. Oh, yeah, you got me. Jok didn't carry his team to the championship last year. fingergun like I said. Let's see how he'll do without Morgan and Dondre next year then we'll talk. ...do you have a soft spot for those Trojans?

    ThaiHawk

  • Basketball is a team sport. Jok was the only player on his team, Lohaus is surrounded by talent. Also, Lohaus is not a fit for McCaffery's play style, that's why he hasn't (and wont) get a look from Iowa. There's a load of point guards Iowa is after for 14, all will be better than Lohaus.

Just clarifying Lohaus and Morgan were the best players, stop mentioning Dondre. He was suspended then quit basketball, they did it without him this year.

    kingiowa

  • I aware of that King but was responding to this- Lohaus has been a leader and top player on back-to-back State Champs.

Last year, Dondre was the man. Fran should offer this and that. If he hustles like Oladipo, maybe =)

Does anyone know what Josh Oglesby's 3pt % his senior year? I know Jok is more athletic and versitile than Oglesby, but I have to think that some of the pressure will be taken off of him if someone else comes in that is a 3 pt threat. With Oglesby and Jok, plus a improved outside shot from Marble I think this team is much improved next year. And I don't even know what Utoff brings to the offensvie game.

  • Holy Batman. Didn't know he was a top 150 player in the country.
4A player of the year. I thought Uthoff was. Aren't they in the same class? Or Uthoff was just Gatorade player of the year for Iowa.?

    http://thegazette.com/2011/11/16/iowas-fran-mccaffery-wants-josh-oglesby-to-keep-on-shooting/
and he shot 39.9% his senior season at Wash, made 87 of them. I believe 40% for his junior season. So, Ok.

Those aren't great stats in HS. I think he can be a 35% 3 point shooter in college though. He'll find his shot. He better hope he does. Or Jok will take all his minutes next year.

    This is Uthoff's Profile.

Named 2011 Mr. Basketball and 2011 Gatorade Player of the Year in Iowa... 1,000-point scorer for his career ... named first team all-state and Mississippi Valley Conference Player of the Year after averaging 26.2 points, 11.2 rebounds and 3.2 blocks per game his senior campaign... team captain as a senior... as a junior, averaged 21 points and 10 rebounds per contest while guiding his team to its first Class 4A state tournament appearance since 1999... first team all-state and 2010 Mississippi Valley Conference Player of the Year... made 55 percent of field-goal attempts and 80 percent of free-throw attempts as a junior ... first team all-state pick by the Iowa Newspaper Association and a second team all-state pick by the Des Moines Register...averaged 15 points and 7.6 rebounds per game to earn honorable mention all-conference honors as a sophomore... Academic All-MVC his senior and junior seasons... member of National Honor Society and junior class president with a 4.0 grade-point-average... was a Read Along mentor for two years... Little J-Hawk Camp volunteer for three years... volunteer peer helper for basketball and bowling for Special Olympics...
