Football Position Changes

  • Morehouse article reporting the following position changes.
Greg Mabin - WR to DB
Nate Meier - LB to DE
Steve Ferentz - TE to OL
Macon Plewa - LB to FB

The Mabin move surprised me a little, simply because we are so deep with quality DBs. I realize that we have a lot of WRs in the 13 class, but it seems to be more of a position where playing time is still up for grabs. Also, he had Meier listed as having played last season. I'm bummed because I thought he was going to be a red-shirt freshmen. I love the Plewa move, because I think he will really compete for pt soon. The Ferentz move - it is what it is.

I was a little puzzled by the Mabin move as well, but the more I think about it, I think it's more of a reflection of a lack of talent and depth at free safety, as I think that's where he'd fit best on defense.

Meier got some time on special teams before going down with an injury.

With Rogers gone and Weisman apparently sticking at running back, Iowa is unbelievably thin at fullback, which is one reason I'd be pretty surprised to see a traditional fullback used more than every once in awhile moving forward. In situations where Iowa wants a lead blocker out of the backfield, I think it might be more of a case where it's a tight end playing as an H-back more often than not.

Marc has specifically said cornerback twice. I accept the fact no one really knows, but if he would've said defensiveback feild I'd agree with you on the FS theory.

15 National Championships and one Urban Meyer heart attack, Roll Tide. 23 NC's in wrestling and one badass Herky, Go Hawks.

We'll have to see how it plays out. I'm not saying he's wrong, but the website just says DB, I think Greg fits better at safety, and there's much more of a need there than at corner.
