Decision coming soon for Edwards? Scroll down for latest update

  • If the reason is just as simple as Ferentz giving a scholly to Dawson or Malloy in place of Edwards, then this staff has lost it's mind.

  • 1. Obviously I'm as surprised as everybody else that we pulled Edwards scholarship.

    2. IIRC, Andre Dawson graduated high school the same year as me which was 2009, that said he's currently listed as a Sophomore on the roster and he's already used his RS, so he and Weisman will both be Juniors next year.

    3. I don't know what a lot of you guys are smoking when you try to say we only have 3 RB's on the roster with any ability to play. Canzeri, Hill, and Malloy all have ability, Canzeri has already played for the Hawkeyes against Oklahoma, some claim he looked weak and think he can't amount to anything because OKLAHOMA held him to a 2 YPC. Malloy was an early offer RB that had his scholarship pulled only for a dumb kid mistake, but was still promised one if he kept put of trouble which by all accounts he has. Trust me, he has talent and he should be a good back when all is said and done. Hill is the biggest question obviously, I would say he's probably one of the least athletic RB's on the roster, but he is a solid runner and fits our running game well. I won't be afraid at all if/when Hill sees the field.

I would consider Bullock and Garmon AN all purpose back Fu biggrin Am I wrong? garmon needs an off season to build up more but has good hands and Bullock has good hands.

Bullock is more all purpose than Garmon. I'd consider Garmon skat like because hes obviously more speed/juking than running through a defender.

Yes but he has a good frame and is only a true freshman. He probably will be a scat back that can catch out of the backfield but i would not count him out of putting on 15 to 20 and having more power in the future I mean he can easily grow to 220 with his frame and still keep the speed

    I said #3...and I stand by it...

I guess its my fault, I should've been more to the point that Berkley Edwards is SUPERIOR to all but our top 3 of Weisman, Bullock and Garmon, right now as a high schooler.

And when I say "ability", I mean top end skills that are game changing ability. Those are the only 3 we have that have any.

Well the agreement between Iowa and Malloy was that he would get a scholarship after walking on for a season as long as he handled his business on and off the field. Not sure whether or not that's related to what happened with Edwards, but no matter who Iowa landed in the 2013 class, Malloy was set to be on scholarship next year. The part about Dawson was just pure speculation for me in terms of trying to come up with a reason.

I agree about Garmon at this point, but he might very well turn into a different type of player once he spends some time in Iowa's offseason program.

Well I guess we disagree on that. I don't remember much of Edwards tape but I have a hard time saying he's absolutely superior than the guys I mentioned. Jeff Jones is one thing, Berkley Edwards is another.

  • Gonna plant my flag on my own little island........

RB isn't Iowa's problem. HEALTHY RUNNINGBACKS are (part) of Iowa's problem.
I like every back the Hawks have in their system-except Garmon.
Didn't like his game when they were recruiting him, don't like it now.

Hunt gets his legs healthy he factors more than Edwards ever would.
Berk would have been nice on teams, in the passing game yeah......but he's a luxury to me at this point.
Kirk has what, 5-6 ships left to give?

    Use them on:
    Pass rushers
    Linebackers
Receivers who are "difference Makers" and I'm good.

Take your shot at Jones next year if you like-he's worth the old college try in any event.

  • Edwards might be headed to minnesota by default. Who knows if the new staff at cal will want him. Great example of a recruit overplaying his hand in my opinion. I understand why his dad is being thorough but he also needs to realize that berkley is not on the same level as braylon was, and teams arent going to wait around for a mid 3 star recruit. 2 bad tho, i would have liked to have him on the team.

If Garmon puts in the work this off season , he will be an excrptional player for the hawks. He has the most natural ability by far...its up to him to take advantage of it.

when it comes to backs, I'm not as keen on "natural ability" as I am on things like:

    *Body lean
    *0-60 acceleration
    *ability to play in traffic
    * 1 cut-tackle to tackle decision making

all of which I find of primary importance in a scheme such as the Hawkeyes employ.

GG could be exceptional, but I'll respectfully maintain it won't happen without a position switch.

It'll be interesting to see how it develops. The current running backs coach was there before Tedford got there, and Tedford retained him. He's arguably the coach on the staff with the best national reputation, so it'd be a smart move for the new coach - whoever it is - to retain him as well. If that happens, and things move relatively quickly, I could see Cal still landing Edwards. But these developments have definitely put Minnesota in the driver's seat.

I agree with this. He's already shown flashes this year, and you can tell his mind is still going 100 MPH right now. As things slow down, he should improve significantly. And his coach always raved to me about Garmon's work ethic. He's never had a chance to really devote much time to the weight room since he played three sports. If he works as hard as his high school coach thinks he will, he could head into fall camp in 2013 a completely different player.

Body lean is very important, but I've always felt that's something that can be coached up.

As for the other factors you mentioned, I think he's got the physical ability to be excellent in each area. However, I don't think he's really let it all hang out yet this year because he's thinking so much. Having a full season under his belt should make him much more comfortable with the system, so he should be able to let his natural abilities take over next year.

Disagreement is not a bad thing among friends DER. After stepping away from the keyboard for the night, I now know I may have been overly harsh and critical, but that happens when a disappointing season comes to an end, and this turd is laid down on top of it.

Check out Edwards senior tape if you get the time. You'll see what I mean.

The thing that gets me is there is an overall perception that we need better skilled players. Edwards fits that bill. And we had a realistic shot at landing him. Jeff Jones? Here's my take on how Jones' recruitment will go....

Think sometime in the late spring, Todd will on the phone talking to him..."Hey Todd, just want to let you know what I think of Iowa...the fans are great, the atmosphere is electric at Kinnick, the coaches have been there forever and they send a lot of guys to the NFL, the campus is beautiful and academically its a perfect fit for me...not to mention that Iowa has been recruiting me the longest and the hardest...I can definitely see myself being a HAWKEYE...wait...whats that Dad?...hold on a second Todd...they did?...Notre Dame just offered me?...sorry Todd, I gotta go, I just committed to the Fighting Irish. GO HAWKEYES!"...*click*

I've said for awhile now, 2014 will be a banner recruiting year for us...now I'm thinking only that it "could" be, cuz after decisions like this by our coaches, I honestly just don't know.

Too many Mossbruckers on this team.
