DE's Iowa Should Give a Look to..

  • Just a token look around at the offers we have out for DE's and it doesn't look great. A couple of guys are supposed to visit, but the rest of our offerees have Iowa on the proverbial back burner. We need at least 4 DE's in this class, IMO. We are stuffed at DT, and not only do we need the impact "plug n play" freshman DE, but we also need depth. These guys took me 20 minutes to look up, smell like the classic Iowa recruit. Little interest, as of now, but they all can play, barring any grade issues.

Taariq Shabazz. - 3☆ SDE 6'3 250lbs - no offers, from GA which is close to the NO RECRUIT ZONE, but a really good athlete with a nice burst.

Kyron Speller - 3☆ WDE 6'2 245lbs - no offers, from VA which should be good for some of our new coaches. Kid is a versatile athlete.

Anthony Villalobos - 3☆ SDE 6'3 240 lbs - one offer, from TX...surprisingly good athlete.

Greg Washington - NR SDE 6'3 205lbs - no offers, another kid from VA. Speed rush end. Physically strong, and looks a lot bigger than the listed 205 lbs.

Jonathan Bonner - 3☆ SDE 6'4 244lbs - no offers, from MO. Big and fast. Versatile ATH, plays TE as well.

  • I agree we need to at least double the 4 offers that I can find that we have out there. This has been our most urgent need both of the last 2 yrs. and we have failed to even come close to filling it! Todd, are you hearing anything that gives us encouragement or hope?

  • Yes to all of this. I am kind of surprised that we aren't offering more at this point. I would think we would be going crazy offering DEs. Good research here.

  • Great research, and as I think Brad said in another thread, its baffeling that we can't recruit DE with much success. We have had a great track record with that position in the NFL.

Yeah it blows my mind, someone is not selling the fact hard enough, they need the head coach and everybody they can on the de position.

Gold medals aren't really made of gold. They're made of sweat, determination, and a hard-to-find alloy called guts.

  • I just can't believe they haven't offered Harrison Phillips from Nebraska yet!

I agree. I understand the logic of not having coordinators and HC on the road as much (not that I completley agree, but I understand the argument), but when it comes to key recruits or key position groups from year to year I think you have to invest all resrouces to fill/fix needs.

    Dear Valued Fan,

Thank you for your interest in Iowa Hawkeye Football! We appreciate your support and recommendations for athletes to recruit, they will be taken under consideration and I will personally give these recommendations to Kirk Ferentz. In accordance with NCAA rules however I will not be able to discuss the exact recruitment of any athlete we are currently recruiting.

I thank you again for your interest in Iowa Hawkeye football and I hope to see you in the crowd this fall at Kinnick Stadium.

    Go Hawks!

  • DE is one thing. Being made of the "right stuff" for a student-athelete is another. Great athletes are not always great students or great citizens. I think lowa looks at the strength and quality of all three legs on the stool. Three-stars not recruited by ANYONE? Just a coincidence? Usually not. Schools do not look for greatness or perfection in their scholarship offers, but they do look for some kind of comfort zone as to the athlete's ability to succeed on and off the field. There are plenty of great high school athletes, but I would not give you 2 cents for some of them based on their worth off the field- in the classroom or on the streets. Think of them as being either an asset or a liability.

You're absolutely right that character has to be one component of every evaluation. But to be honest, a lot of other schools have been able to find defensive ends that have had better careers than the ones Iowa has been bringing in. Maybe some of them were low character guys, but some of them had to have been high character guys that didn't end up at Iowa for whatever reason.

  • I thought Bonner looked the best to me. Plus he's from Missouri, which means Iowa's closer to home. He has a nice combo of size, athleticism and speed--I was impressed by the play where he ran down the RB. Speller seems too short for DE but I could see him at MLB. Washington actually looked smaller to me than 6'3" 205. Maybe OLB?
