Cornholer chuckles

  • Some nebraska chucklehead linebacker, Whaley, was quoted in the I.C. Press-Corruption today as saying this:

Talking about the IOWA v Nebraska 'rivalry' game, he says:

'Nebraska already has the best program in the country', Whaley said.
'I guess Iowa's football program is building up'.

Said chucklehead also is quoted as saying, ' Just being one of the best football programs in the country, I think Iowa
would have to build their program and make it more of a football program as well.'

Wow---------I really hope the IOWA coaches see this bonehead's comments.
Apparently, Pelini only requires that he read 'Husker propaganda'...........apparently on their
Campus, they show rankings stopping with the Cornholers as #1, instead of Oregon, Notre Dame, Alabama, etc.
    LOL

  • Wish Iowa had something to brag about. It's been a few years since Iowa had the ability to make a slip up about how dominate a program we are -- ala a certain linebacker, Fred Barr, who was known to run his mouth from time to time.

He says they are the best FB program in the country.

Do you know what the term program means?

Nebraska has the fourth most wins all-time thru 2011.

I really don't give a rat's patooey how many wins the Cornholers have!
Who did they play most of those years? Kansas? Maine? Cupcake univ?

So, FG.......since you appear to be a real CF expert, having the '4th most wins' makes anyone
    the Best in the country?

    Yeah, right

Obviously comprehension is lacking here. Whaley didn't say the best team in the country. He said program. Program. That is very different than saying this team is the best team in the country currently. Nebraska has won more games than any other program in modern CFB history, i.e., since 1960. Thus, yes, they are the best program in the modern era.

Rather than resorting to immature name calling support your team, please. We respect Iowa, and you all should too. We do wish for your team to play well and to see your program build upon past success. That is what Whaley meant. He was not trying to disrespect the team or program.

Happy Thanksgiving to all Hawkeye fans!

If that's what Whaley meant, as you assert, he needs to retake rhetoric class because the statement doesn't have any language indication an interpretation to the contrary.

Notwithstanding the original posts youthful banter, I have no doubt Sky is one of the most loyal Hawkeye supporters.

Yes it does. If you compare Nebraska's resources and recruiting base with the other schools in the top ten of wins we have the biggest disadvantages, yet we are the most successful, especially over the last 50 years.

We also have the most dominant dynasty in CF since probably Army/Navy during WWII or something. And it won't ever be matched again. Pretty awesome a state with a population of less than 2 million could do that. But hey, thats why were the best! Feels good.

  • Back @ ya Truthhurts. Well, Whaley is a lot of emotion, like a lot of these kids, but he's not much of an in-your-face guy ...just very intent. He got humbled pretty good after the UCLA game and had to learn to earn his playing time, again. He's done well since that game.

None of us would be here if we weren't all pretty loyal and avid fans. I certainly take no umbrage with the friendly banter.

    Well, thanks Truth.
    It's still a PREPOSTEROUS statement.
The Cornholers' program is best in the country?
Well, if 'the country' is Lincoln, NE county line, then well I guess you could maybe say that.

  • Why pick "since 1960" as the "modern era" to be scrutinized? Most people consider 1945+ to be the modern era. As far as all-time greatest programs - Michigan, ND and Alabama come to mind before the Huskers. To be sure, Iowa has a long ways to go to reach Nebraska's level of program history, but please keep the chest-thumping to a minimum.

Simple... integration wasn't in effect for college football until the 1960s. Modern era includes the fact that black players could play.

    klein12

  • Ummm...true integration did not begin until 1973, when Bear Bryant decided to bring black players into Alabama, and thus the SEC.

Also, northern schools benefitted greatly in the years from 1945 to 1973 because tremendous black athletes in the South came north to play, because southern schools would not take them. I remember Duffy Daugherty's great MSU teams of the 1950's and 1960's featuring some truly outstanding black players from the South - Bubba Smith, George Webster, and Gene Washington come to mind immediately. Those players nowadays tend to stay in Texas or other southern states to play.

The fact that Alabama and Texas were able to build and maintain such great "programs" while facing that natural disadvantage is even more impressive.
