Ding-Dong, P Harty is wrong, once again.
In today's ICPC, he tried to rank the Top 10 players under KF.
I'll start with his Top 5...........Harty said
1. R Gallery
2. Bob Sanders
3. Nate Kaeding
4. Abdul Hodge
5. Chad Greenway
To which, I say 'huh'???
Here's my Top 5 :
1) Bob Sanders (took Iowa from a non-competitive defense to a super defense, almost single-handedly, early on)
2) Nate Kaeding, He was such a disruptive force at Kicker, he ranks ahead of Gallery
3) R Gallery; OK, I can settle for him here, but Bryan Bulaga, Riley Rieff, Eric Steinbach as good at Offensive Line
4) Dallas Clark; For Purdue game alone, I'd rank him in Top 10
5) Shonn Greene; Won top Running Back on espy awards; Still in NFL; Lead Iowa to Outback bowl win
'Texan by birth, Hawkeye by the Grace of God'
If you don't like my opinion, at least you can enjoy the view
I'm going to assume this is based on their college careers.
and you said top 10, so:
10) Roth/Angerer (can't decide on the last spot)
The will is not here, the will is at my office next to the hot plate with the frayed wires.
wow, Angerer at 10 for one list and no Tate yet.
It's funny. I bounce back and forth all the time. Good thing this question almost comes around almost yearly.
Is this a top 10 in terms of how good they are or who our favorites are?
Here's the article from ICPC/Hawkeyecentral.......so, I'm crediting them, here.
Fish.........I take it as the players that were most effective, game-changing, Winners, while at Iowa.
However, their Pro careers also are a supplement / testament to their greatness.
I guess I just cannot justify an offensive linemen as #1, despite the fact that
I played Offensive line in Frosh ball in HS, so I know their importance.
Interesting discussion here. There are certainly a lot of quality players to choose from. Especially with regards to a top-10 list, I'm a little surprised that McNutt hasn't been mentioned yet, as arguably the best receiver in the Ferentz era.
1.) Brad Banks, he reignited the Iowa football following

The problem is, and I'm not knocking McNutt at all, this unfortunately isn't saying much.
Based strictly upon college performance, I would go with:
Runners up: Angerer, Russell, Spievey, McNutt
Marvin McNutt is on Harty's Top 10, I think at 8.
No problem with that, however, it must be pointed out that
Derrell Koulianos had more receptions, right?
Definitely more Kickoffs returned for TD's.
Wow, DJK was fun to watch play the game of football.
Good point, as it's possible that the third or fourth best player at some positions was better overall than the best receiver.
Roth, Greenway and Hodge were so fun to watch
In terms of what he meant for Iowa football, I don't think anyone has been more important than Bob Sanders. Maybe others have been better, but he is the MVP of the KF era so far. I can't objectively rank him because I am a little too passionate about how awesome he is, so I'll rank the top-9 other players.
1. Robert Gallery
2. Shonn Greene
3. Chad Greenway
4. Brad Banks
5. Nate Kaeding
6. Dallas Clark
7. Eric Steinbach
8. Matt Roth
9. Adrian Clayborn
Wow. That leaves a ton of awesome players off the list.
Agree with what thejumper5 wrote.
Bob Sanders was and is still simply in a League of his own.
Bob won the NFL Defensive player of the year for pete's sake.
Bob 'the Missile' Sanders was the catalyst for the whole resurgence of
Hawkeye football under KF.
Very true. I think it's impossible to come up with 10 that everyone will agree on, because you'll always be leaving some great players off the list.
Sanders truly was a joy to watch, both at Iowa and in the NFL.
Im pretty close to DieHardHawk's list.
I havent looked up these in awhile but I followed recruiting pretty close back then and off the top of my head I'll tell ya what their star ratings/ offers were. (Feel free to correct me).
Sanders: 2 Star, Ohio offer
Gallery: NR, TE with no other offers
Greene: 3 star, wanna say VT offer
Kaeding: NR, soccer player, no offers
Clark: NR, no offers, started at LB
Greenway: HS 8-man QB, no other offers
Clayborn: 4 star, lots of offers
Hodge: 3 star, couple offers
Bulaga: 4 star, lots of offers
Yanda: NR, JUCO, No offers outta HS
Roth: 4 Star, lots of offers
Pretty crazy that half of Iowa's best players over the last 14 years were walkons/NR/only had an Iowa offer.
In no particular order:
4. Mitch King
9. Mo Brown
For this year and moment...
Tate, Sanders, Greenway, Greene, Angerer
McNutt, Gallery, Steinbach, Clark, Banks, ...Kaeding/King/Clayborn/Hodge/Roth/Spievey/Considine/Sash
Ok, I'm cheating with my last spot there. =) Basically, these guys would deliver every time they are on the field. Heck, I'll take Bradley and Donahue as well. Can't ignore the punters.
notice that the surprise recruits were pretty much all 10 or more years ago. sadly, most of the consensus top 10 kf players are contextual old timers, too. it like the hawks peaked in 02 or 03.
silver.........apparently you forgot that we won the Orange Bowl, circa 2010.
That team was perhaps the most talented, ever at Iowa, with the
2005 recruiting haul, finally bearing some Great fruit.
Angerer, Edds, Spievey, Bulaga, Clayborn, Klug, Stanzi, Ballard are some of the
NFL players from that team.
And yes, I'm going to go ahead and say that my preference at Linebacker tandem was &
always will be Angerer & Edds. Wow, what a pair their senior year.
we're talking abt the all-kf-era team. as i said, most of the selectees are from the earlier part of the era. you list some fine, more recent players. they are not, however, prominent in the discussion of all kf players. that is, the best of the early seem to be ranked higher by our discussants than the best of the recent.
in my view, the exception is adrian clayboom. he should be in the kf top 10.
