Wrestling owns the Olympics
does this open the door for grant to come back?
I don't know, I would not put it past the coaches to do it, just for a statement to Lofthouse as an eye opener. But those 2 are the same wrestler to me, all the talent in the world with speed and strength but under achieve all the time. I don't get them, but I guess Backes is their coach and I think next to tshirt was one of the biggest underachievers in my memory.
For those of you not at work, the Iowa/Michigan duel is on BTN right now.
is Iowa looking at this kid? Aaron Pico - Bellflower CA.
believe me he is the real deal - HS FR 132#. (btw - they have 2 others worth a watch) - but this kid is special
Either this website doesn't exist or is not currently available.
Anybody from a school named "Bosco" is worth hating.
Two articles on the Minny preview
Catholic school - kinda like Heelan. They recruit wherever they can steal - er - i mean recruit the better athletes without regards to religion or faith.
they also have the Valencia brothers - HS SOs - both state champs last year as FR, and should do the same this year.
i might go watch them again tomorrow.

So how is everybody feeling about this Minny dual?
Im nervous to say the least. I would say Minnesota is favored but alot of toss-ups in there.
IOWA RANKINGS (weight, rank)
Matt McDonough (125, 1st)
Tony Ramos (133, 1st)
Mark Ballweg (141, 7th)
Michael Kelly (149, 25th)
Derek St. John (157, 1st)
Nick Moore (165, 18th)
Mike Evans (174, 4th)
Ethen Lofthouse (184, 13th)
Nathan Burak (197, 22nd)
Bobby Telford (285, 7th)
The NCAA released Thursday the first of three coaches' panel rankings for the 2012-13 wrestling season, and three Hawkeyes are on top of their respective weight classes. Matt McDonough, Tony Ramos and Derek St. John are ranked No. 1, and each of Iowa's 10 starters is ranked among the top 33.
this is a cut-n-paste from another site - pin2win
125: MCD hasn't been putting up the big points it seems and don't think he will do it up in Minnesota against Thorn. Thorn is outmatched here but MCD just pulls out a dec.
133: Ramos is on a tear but don't see him going up to Minnesota and putting up big points againsts Dardenes. Dardenes is a tough wrestler and this one could go down to the wire. I think Ramos squeaks one out.
141: Ballweg impressed me a lot these last couple of duals and I am officially on the Ballweg train. His shots are crisp and powerful. Ballweg dec over Dardenes
149: Ness clearly the better wrestler and will score bonus points in this matchup. I am going with a major over Kelly but could see a fall here that kills the hawks hopes of winning.
157: DSJ continues to wrestle smart but won't put up big points against Zilverburg. Minnesota will have a game plan against DSJ because they know its a turning point in the dual if they can hold it to a decision.
165: Yohn will pound and pound Moore in this match. Think size will be the factor and give Yohn the decision but not the major
174: Storley has been one of my favorite gopher wrestlers. No clue why but I respect the kid's talents and think he pulls off a big win over Evans. Evans doesn't wrestle the same outside of Carver and that is the difference maker in this match.
184: Stienhouse is a beast and Lofthouse won't be in this match for the whole 7 mins. I think the score will reflect that he is but he never had a chance to beat him.
197: Burak is capable of a win here as he continues to improve in all aspects of college wrestling. I see Burak pulling off a big win for the hawks!
HWT: Sadly Telford is up against Nelson who I don't think is very good and lets people stay in the match. I think Telford stays in the match and keeps up but Nelson has just enough to pull out the win in the third period.
Minnesota wins 16-15
my personal opinion is:
125: MCD pulls out a dec.
133: Ramos wins - and it is a comfortable reg dec.
141: Ballweg wins (and if he does - i guarantee an AA for this stud!)
149: Ness wins a reg dec - close match that is not that close.
157: DSJ wins by major/TF.
165: Yohn may win (imo - moore has a real shot here)
174: Evans wins - and the place gets pissed off/nuts.
184: Stienhouse beats lofty.
197: Burak wins!
HWT: Nelson wins.
ok - so i back track a bit from my earlier post - but i think Evans and Ballweg make this an iowa win. Hope that Lofty/Moore/Burak/Telford can make this a complete domination. see no chance for kelly, unless he learns to get a single leg td.
imagine him in the Z years
Before the Illinois/Minnesota duel I thought it would be close, with Minnesota probably getting the W.
Now we'll have to see how Minnesota responds to the close win. I'm not a big predictions guy with wrestling, but I can see Iowa winning close or losing close. It's going to come down to (again) bonus points, and "tossup" matches (bold prediction, eh?).
Also, and I don't really like it, but I can see Ramos going down in his match. If that happens, Hawks probably don't come home winners.
First, thanks for this thread. This is my first time posting on it, but I do follow the thread and appreciate the efforts of those who keep us informed. I love to follow Iowa wrestling but find I don't have as much time to devote to it, so I have to pick my spots.
This duel is a huge gauge as to where this team is at. IMO, the 174 and 197 matches will decide it, especially if there aren't significant bonus points. I would love to see Evans pull this one out, but agree that Storley is a complete stud. That match alone is worth the price of admission.
5 minutes till wrestling and no one is up and running here? Go Hawks, pin the Goofers!
I am here just nervous about this meet.
Swarm appears to be at the meet so I hate him now
Starting at 125 it appears
McD pitches Thorn to back and loses it gets taken down himself. 2-0 Thorn after 1
Its on BTN if anyone was wondering.
McD down 2-3 after 2nd
McD with the take down and rides out 3-2 Thorn
Also watching it on BTN right now.
'bout time some live Iowa wrestling is on BTN.
Let's Go Hawks!
