Who's going Saturday?
Guys, can you start a new thread for each meet? This thread is becoming cumbersome.
No way this thread is going to become EPIC. 14 upvotes and this many pages.
just forwarding from als96 on hi
#3 Iowa vs #31 Iowa State (Intermat)
125lbs - #1 Matt McDonough vs #19 Ryak Finch
I'm interested to see how Finch has progressed this year from last year.
133lbs - #3 Tony Ramos vs John Meeks
Meeks was pulled out of redshirt last week against Old Dominion and lost 7-3 against #19 Scott Festejo, this will be a big test for Meeks. I'm guessing he ends up exhausted by the end of the match. A true freshman against a tested top-5 Division 1 wrestler at the beginning of the season is really not a fair match-up.
141lbs - #14 Mark Ballweg vs #18 Luke Goettl
Last year Goettl (sounds like kettle) had some good wins. I think he has a lot of potential. I also think highly of Mark Ballweg. This should be a match to watch.
149lbs - Mike Kelly vs Matt White
Could be someone else for ISU, could be someone else for Iowa. I have faith in Kelly. I think he looked good last weekend, however the competition wasn't very fierce. Brands said that one of the other guys had a chance here (Dzeiwa was mentioned).
157lbs - #1 Derek St. John vs ??
At this weight I'm hoping the ISU guy either gets pinned really fast or has good confidence because otherwise this may not be pretty.
165lbs - Nick Moore vs ??
Moore should win against whoever ISU puts out there.
174lbs - #7 Grant Gambrall/Mike Evans vs #19 Mikey England
Who wrestles here for Iowa? Both are good wrestlers, both have different styles. Brands says it will be Gambrall in the interview. Whoever does wrestle will have a decent match-up against England.
184lbs - #8 Ethen Lofthouse vs #16 Boaz Beard
This will be Lofthouse's first big test of the season at 184. He's done well thus far however Beard is no slouch.
197lbs - Nathan Burak/Tomas Lira vs #15 Kyven Gadson
Currently I'm feeling a toss-up between Lira & Burak. Lira has more experience and I felt that last year he could have done well if he had been in the line-up all season. Burak looked like a true freshman wrestling this past Saturday. I've never watched him wrestle before, but all I hear is that he is great. He has yet to prove it to me however. Whoever steps on that mat against Gadson better be ready to show that he deserves the spot in the lineup.
285lbs - #5 Bobby Telford vs #17 Matt Gibson
Gibson is a good wrestler. I want to see Telford win with assurance against ranked opponents. I'm looking for Telford to take charge in his matches. He does it against lesser opponents, I want him to do it against ranked opponents.
I have season tickets to ISU and I can tell you this if they do not wrestle better this week (it is Iowa they should) they only stand a chance at 184 (Beard was the ONLY Isu wrestler who came to wrestle) and Gadsen. Meeks had Colon beat at the Harold Nichols but had his last take down waived off. Then against Old Dominion he didn't look himself, he is lightening fast and could score at will against some, he could give Ramos a match but it depends who shows up and like bp said Ramos will wear him down.
157 will be Molina more than likely and I do not see him giving DSJ any problems.
165 will be Moreno and he has looked good so Moore better come prepared to wrestle.
149 unless they pull the young Morenos redshirt I see a pin or a lopsided match in our favor.
141 Goettl has looked pathetic but he can wrestle so it depends who shows up.
174 England looked lazy and worthless I am not real worried here unless Weatherman wrestles if he does watch out, whoever wrestles for us better be prepared for a brawl. I think Weatherman is hands down the better wrestler for them and is super aggressive so you don't want to relax at all if he does happen to wrestle.
Gadsen is working is ring rust off but is super talented. He was the the only guy ranked in the top 10 (2nd) that Evans did not beat(they did not wrestle) when Evans was a senior. I could see him winning a National Championship in the future. But he is coming off 2 shoulder surgeries and against Old Dominion he just did what it took to win and didn't show much.
Heavyweight should be the same outcome as last year.
All in all unless there are some up sets I say we win 8 matches to 2 and I have not had time to guess at a score yet.
Oh I forgot 125. Finch has not looked good this year he lost at the Herold Nichols and a true freshman (Peters from UNI) ended up wining it by beating the guy that beat Finch and he lost to the Old Dominion guy. If Mcd comes ready he is going to destroy Finch. Finch still looks small and is not living up to his number 1 ranking coming out of high school
Ok since Iowa didn't go to Las Vegas this year, I'm going to talk about it here, and by it, I mean one particular match that has me the most excited at work I think I've ever been.
UNI's Tanner Haitt beat Michigan's #9 (and defending Cliff Keen champ) Eric Grajales 13-6. Now I don't really know that much about Mr. Grajales, because for some reason I don't really remember him much from last year, but this is such a big win for UNI and Haitt that I had to share with all my wrestling friends. Heres hoping that Wolfensberger can pull off another upset against Stieber.................
Also, the Daily Iowan had a good article about Ramos going up against ISU's Meeks, who was and undefeated, 4-time Iowa State champ. Heres a link
Grajales was the #2 recruit in the country coming out of High School for all weights he was behind Taylor who was one. That is a HUGE win for Hiatt and that is sweet. UNI is going to be a challenger soon and the best part about it is most all of the great wrestlers are all from Iowa.
it is also pathetic that the Iowa/Iowa St. meet is not on IPTV or the BigTen I know ISU is a rebuilding program but this meet should always be on tv (other than the media com channel) How can you get people excited about wrestling when you don't show rivalry meets
I was shocked when I heard it was going to be on Mediacom and not IPTV.
Also, apparently when I stop paying attention (I had to drive to CR and do some stuff) everyone from UNI decides to lose. Wolfensberger got pinned by Stieber in less then a minute. Sigh. Only Loder is on the championship side of things still (with the semi's and finals to still go). A disappointing end to an otherwise positive day.
ya but there is some tough ass competition there. UNI is headed in the right direction
Very very tough competition. tOSU is really looking good. Bonus points all over the place, and in first place overall.
Michigan...they really dropped off. Had a couple of their really good guys lose and are way behind in team points.
Do you think UNI will beat ISU this year?
Yes I do in a close one
fuisu, thought you didn't care about upvotes.
Ok for1 if everyone wants individual threads for meets let me know,I want people to gain interest and join in not lose people. For2 I wont b at my computer for the meet tonight so I will do what I can for updates so if swarm or bp or whoever cam help out i would be grateful. So GO HAWKS STOMP SOME AMES A**
Either way is fine, but a live thread with the opponent mentioned in the topic, like we do for both FB and BB, would definitely get more traffic.
