Willie Saylor, Editor
The NWCA has released the seeds for each of the four regional tournaments that will filter into Mat Mayhem’s grand finale.
Sixteen teams will compete this Sunday at four locations around the country. The four winners will combine with four squads (Iowa, Minnesota, Ohio State, and Illinois) who received automatic qualification to the finals. All eight will head to Minnesota the following weekend (Feb. 23rd) for a chance to capture college wrestling’s National Dual title.
All regionals can be viewed live on Flowrestling’s Tech Wave platform. Existing members are good to go. Those wishing to sign up can do so here.

Gold medals aren't really made of gold. They're made of sweat, determination, and a hard-to-find alloy called guts.
Disappointing to say the least...
Well they do it to rest I am sure which is a load of , they should be FORCED to be in it
I do not disagree with this^
Would one of you please explain to me what your talking about. I guess Penn State is opting out of something. Sorry but I haven't been around wrestling my whole life. The sport wasn't played in my part of Texas. Thanks!
They are not participating in the National Duals to save energy for the National Championships, it is a bs move, it does nothing to help the sport or support it and is classless in my opinion,.
While I don't disagree with you, this is what I was talking about when I wrote that big long essay in the wrestling thread. These coaches talk every day about "what will grow the sport of wrestling" and then stuff like this happens. I daresay it happened with Iowa this year also (not going to Midlands, which was on national TV, not sending the A squad to ANY individual tournaments this year at all), so it's not just an individual team thing, it's a national problem.
Aha! I found my earlier post. Here were my thoughts a month and a half ago:
"Watching the Midlands finals tonight got me thinking. Everyone (coaches, fans, supporters etc) always talks about growing the sport of wrestling. Getting more events on TV, exposing more people to the sport, having more events in general etc. Whatever their ideas are, they all have the same goal: to get more people watching and interested in the sport. This is a great goal of course, because I really like wrestling.
But when I turned the finals on tonight, the arena was barely half full. And looking at the teams involved, I can't say I don't understand why. Illinois won, and they have a good squad, but Illinois isn't exactly known for their wrestling following. The second place team in VTech is probably the next best/well known team in the country, (maybe next to Oklahoma or Central Michigan, but it's not exactly important). I mean every time that anyone asks a wrestling guy about what wrestling needs, they say they need to grow their sport and have more events on national TV. You had that tonight, but no one was there, the matchups weren't exactly top notch, and the atmosphere was dull and unexciting.
Now the way that I see this become a non-issue, is you get the best teams in the nation to go to these events. Not only Iowa, but Minnesota, Oklahoma State, Penn State, Ohio State, Missouri, etc. to actually go to these events. I understand scheduling problems, and that there are some events on the same weekend, but at least one top 5 team at an event is such (at least for me) bigger draw then to watch a bunch of sub-15 squads. If you have Iowa at Midlands this year (as they are most years) the arena fills up, it's more exciting, a top 5 or 6 or whatever ranked team they are now, is there and the other teams have someone to look up to and look to upset. For me it just makes it more exciting and more memorable.
I don't know how you fix scheduling problems. I know Iowa/Brands was worried about a short week with tOSU coming to town on the 4th and only having 4 days turnaround, which is why Iowa didn't go to Midlands this year. Maybe Iowa could reach out to tOSU and be like, hey maybe if we both go, it will be a more even dual, and it'll be a good tournament. And maybe both teams reached out and one was like, nope not going to do it, I don't know. I just feel like there needs to be some sort of national guidance on scheduling, or someone to stand up and say (for better or worse) "this is what our sport needs, if you don't want to do it too bad." I know that last sentence doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but there is such a lack of leadership at the very top of the sport and it's not doing the sport any favors.
Now I understand that next year Iowa will (hopefully) be in the Midlands picture next year, and all of this will probably not apply, but just having a sub-par year once can kill events (an example would be the national duels, but that was a lot of different combinations of events, but they had one sub-par attendance year and that was the tipping point)."
In the second to last paragraph there I'm harping on exactly this issue: That college wrestling has NO leadership at a national level. Sure the NWCA can come in and try to do something, but the coaches who disagree with their decisions are going to do whatever they want anyway.
After the national tournament, I fully support a NCAA-sanctioned dual tournament featuring the top 12 teams (pointwise) in the traditional tournament. The top 4 teams would earn a bye and would host the quarterfinals. The first round would be at the home mat of the higher seed. Final Four in some location such as Chicago, Des Moines, Omaha, St. Louis.
I much prefer duals to tournaments, which is probably anathema to wrestling purists. But, you know what? If wrestling is really serious about building a base of fans beyond the wrestling community, they have to change. Most people understand duals - mano e mano, every match counts towards who wins. Most laymen do not understand the intricacies and rules of tournaments, and lose interest.
there is no real incentive or disincentive for PSU to attend. I suppose the disincentive could have been - that they might not do so well against Iowa, Minny, or OKST. Still think tOSU could have made that ugly for PSU a couple days ago.
the decision not to attend was made many months ago.
Wrestling owns the Olympics
I know and they do it to stay fresh before the National Championships which pisses me off
Actually there should be time to recover for the NCAAs - but the B10s are close - and there are almost 2 weeks difference there too.
I've tried to do the math a bit for the B10s (pretty impossible really) - and it looks like a very, very, close 3 way (i give the slightest edge to minny), with tOSU solid at 4th.
But how PSU ducked and hid from Minny this year is embarrassing on their part. Oh yeah - they did the same with OKST.
So, where is this promoted? Really - on Flowrestling only. There should. No there needs to be a loud mouthed promoter that gets people to want to see this. afraid to miss it. This needs to be on BTN - all the top 4 are from the B1G.
Lack of Promotion is the real problem! Stars are there. Product is there. Price is always right. and the Place is in the heart of wrestling country. Need some Hype! Need a Promoter!
I have not seen 1 thing about this except on some schedule and on the message boards from other fanatics (and face book).

I agree 100% maybe they need me I am a loud mouth emotional bastard that would call PSU on their bs and promote the hell out of all events
well the B1Gs have at least 3 1v2 match ups. BTN should be hyping it a little for the B1G championships that THEY WILL TELEVISE? Maybe a 15 second clip once in awhile showing the 125, 133, 157, and toss in the 174, 184 match ups for the B1G tourney. Put the faces out there early and start to build the excitement - 15 seconds of that would be cool. Geez - you also have 4 of the top 5 teams in the country battling for the B1G title. Put Cael and Tommy and JRob on another 15 second reel. Does not take a genius to see that this can be bigger with bigger awareness.
This makes too much sense.
really not convinced why OKST has to play into the final round - other than this was all decided wayyy too early. I think they have no problems with it, but seems not right.
I agree be nice to know how they figured it, strength of schedule maybe, or last years finish of the duals or National Championship? I dont remember what they finished last year. If it was me Illinois would be dropped out of top 4 and Okie St in.
I thought I read somewhere that it was based on last years results....but I still don't understand how Illinois got in.
this is how the NWCA promotes the sport, and provides results.
Oklahoma State, Cornell, Missouri win National Duals Regionals, and VT also won
Nebby lost to Cornell 19-17. Dake got a pin and kokesh only got the major.
