Reading a CR Gazette story today that talks about Jarrod Uthoff, now checking in as a
6'10" forward. Jarrod will be in his 3rd year of college, never yet taking the court on game day.
That is about to change and Hawkeye fans, for the most part, are unawares of the terrific basketball
player that will be in Black n Gold, next season.
In HS, Jarrod was Iowa's Mr Basketball at CR Jefferson. Saw him play a few times and his ball handling and
shooting skills for a then, 6'7", skinny forward were very impressive. Now, if Jarrod is around 6'10", I'm
really excited to see him on the court for the Hawkeyes. And now I'm trying to think of a player, at that sze,
who has the basketball savvy that Jarrod brings to the game. Not sure, who that is, but I'll keep pondering it.
Jarrod Uthoff may be able to PG, SG, swing, PF & Center. He is going to add a lot to this Hawkeye roster.

'Texan by birth, Hawkeye by the Grace of God'
Wow thanks for sharing. I hadn't heard 6'10" for Uthoff before. I agree that if that height is accurate he could be a very special player for the Hawkeyes next year. I don't want to get my hopes up too much, but Iowa has had some decent history with transfers. Hopefully Uthoff can have a similar impact as Recker or Haluska.
I'm guessing Uthoff will get a lot of minutes at the 3 next year. If he really is 6'10" now that's awesome.
I think Fran called him 6'10" which means he's probably 6'9" at best. I don't see him as a PG we already have 3 of those. Hopefully he can play the three and the four (especially against smaller lineups). I said on another thread earlier I think unless White improves his ability to score within the offense Uthoff could take a lot of his minutes.
Based upon the footage that I saw, I think you could make a case that Uthoff and White are similar. Uthoff strikes me as a little smoother, but White has a lot of intangibles that are hard to teach. That will make for an interesting battle for playing time, and both players will benefit from the competition.
I know it's been discussed fairly extensively, but I for one am quite excited at the potential of next year's roster. Fran is going to have incredible flexibility with all of the returning players and the additions of Uthoff, Meyer and Jok. I'm really hoping that Meyer in particular arrives beefed up and ready to battle down low. We could definitely use a physical presence in the paint. Right now, I see him rotating with Basabe and McCabe at the 4-spot, with Uthoff rotating with White at the 3, but numerous combinations are possible.
Really, the only question at this point is leadership. With May leaving, someone is going to have to step up and fill that role. McCabe is a possibility, as are Marble and Basabe. With his personality, it's hard to see Basabe being assertive enough but you never know. It's somewhat the same with Marble. Personally, I'd like to see Gesell step up. By all accounts, his work ethic is unmatched on the team, and he's a smart guy. I could really see him blossoming as a leader.
I think Uthoff may have a more developed perimeter game than White, but I think that's a pretty good comparison.
Agreed- there are great things ahead for the Hawkeye BB team. Can I make a left turn in the discussion and hear about the recruits Fran may be courting a year or two out?
I think Fran can comfortably work with 10 in the regular rotation. Nice to be deep for a change. Nice to have that kind of talent, but got to keep 'em coming! Next year will be huge to attract the right players that will fit the program.
I'm only vaguely familiar with the Uthoff story - why did he transfer to Iowa from Wisconsin? Was it playing time or the coaches? Homesick? Is he a high character guy or is he going to sketch out after a year or two?
The latest from Jarrod Uthoff (@Mr_Uthoff). Basketball player for the University of Iowa
What's there to explain?
Bozo Ryan is the coach at Wisconsin.
He was red-shirted by the Badcheezers.
The kid made a mistake and wanted to make it right.
So, he joined the Iowa Hawkeye basketball program............a good move.
And in the Final, Sagarin Computer poll, the Iowa Hawkeyes ranked as the #28 best team in college basketball.
As you see, Iowa finished ahead of UNC and others.....to wit: http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/bkt1213.htm
How did North Carolina make the tournament, anyway ?
Upvote for you Sky! I too am excited about the new players next season. I did not know Uthoff had grown more.
Thanks U2Hawk. And in more good news, THE IOWA HAWKEYES received
7 votes in the Final College coaches poll for 2013!!!
It's hard to believe, from where we were about 3 years ago!!
Here's a nice write up on Uthoff, can't wait to see him play in the fall: http://thegazette.com/2013/04/09/uthoff-expects-to-impact-hawkeyes-next-year/
