I think IU will use a tune up game against Jacksonville tonight to get ready. I think they remember they went to Iowa last year and got smoked by 30 or something. I think they respond well this game though. It will be close for a little bit then I think IU will put them away early in the second half.
is finally here!!
mkillian247 on twitter..... I say a lot of stuff you wont care about.
You are predicting the scores when IA visits Bloomington. If IA loses, it will be a closed game since it's in Carver. I predict that IA wins by 5 and IU falls out of the top ten rankings. IA finally wakes up as a sleeper!
Woody in foul trouble early - GabeO comes in to control Zeller and grab many rebounds......and the Hawks hit 35% from the 3pt line (that's 35 percentage points better than last game) and steal a home victory to start the B1G season....before a loud and very proud CHA. Go Hawks.
OldOaken...........wow, nice pictures of Good vs Evil.
Alex is Goooood, by the way. Gooooooooal ! Good Goal.
I'll get back to you with my prediction. Wanna look at some of
IU's games this year.
'Texan by birth, Hawkeye by the Grace of God'
You bring up a great point in that Iowa won't sneak up on anyone this year. I think the Hawkeyes will hang tough, and it should be a heck of an atmosphere at Carver, but I think Indiana pulls it out by five.
There will be many keys to this game...
How efficient our frosh PG's can be vs the senior Hull. A good TO-ASST Ratio is a must. They must also make Hull play D, run him thru countless screens.
How physical the refs will allow the game to be. A physical game favors the Hoosiers.
Iowa must dominate the defensive boards. No second chance points allowed.
Iowa must run, in control, and play good half court O when they can't to have a chance. This means hitting SOME 3's and nearly all of our FT's.
That's a lot of "ifs" for such a young team. I think it will be close...gotta keep the home crowd into it. But I think the vets of Hoosier land steal the game away late. 5-8 points. Say 81-75.
Good point about Hulls on D. He is too valuable on offense for him not to be out there but his D isnt very good.
Marble has a huge game and wills Iowa to a win.
Freshmen playing on a B1G team is one thing, and these guys have done remarkably well. But conference play will be a higher mountain to scale the first time out. They will learn alot early, but not early enough to hold off the Hoosiers. Indiana survives this year's trip to CHA, 81-69.
"I was brought in here to change the culture. I'm going to coach with passion" - Fran McCaffery.
IU will a very sluggish start against Jacksonville. If they start that way at Iowa they will get blown out again
Have the IU players said anything about hoping to get some sort of revenge for last year's game in Iowa City?
I haven't heard of anything they said.
Apparently, some folks are down-playing, or discounting the Iowa Hawkeye's home court advantage in this one.
It's been a few years since IU has won at CHA. I doubt that Tom Crean has ever won at Carver Hawkeye.
In addition, Iowa is 9-0 at CHA, this year and let's just say the crowd will be a bit more vocal and vociferous, at this one,
than any of those 9 previous home wins.
Cody Zeller will have almost 50 relatives, all from Iowa at this game, with the exception of Lori & Steve, his parents. (Live in Indiana, but born and raised in eastern Iowa).
Iowa 77 Indiana 70
Me neither, was just checking. Whether they admit it publicly or not, I'm sure that's on their minds entering this game, which is only natural.
I think most people here expect for Iowa to have a significant homecourt advantage on Monday. However, IU has proven on several occasions that they're one of the elite teams in the country. The Hawkeyes are building toward that level, but haven't proven it yet, and the Hawkeyes haven't played - let alone beaten - a team this year of IU's caliber. That doesn't mean Iowa won't win on Monday, but despite Iowa's improvement and the homecourt advantage at Carver, I think IU is still more battle-tested at this point.
I fear a game similar to OSU at Carver last year. Granted Iowa is much deeper and more athletic, but are we there yet? If the 3's are not falling, it could be a long day. I worry about containment of their wings and this might be a game where someone like May steps up as he has the size and athleticism to battle Sheahy and Olendipo.
IMO, I still don't think we are ready for prime-time! I will say IU 87 and Iowa 71.
I worry even more about Saturday in Ann Arbor. We all know the schedule is brutal right out of the gates. We could start very poorly and yet finish big! I think this is where Fran has proven to be a difference maker as our guys will not lay down if they start out 0-5. If we can start out even 2-3, there is big upside.
Sure wish IU had beaten Butler two weeks ago, because I really wanted Iowa to hand IU their first loss.
Let's Go Hawks!
And from the looks of things, it appears that some posters are ALSO discounting the FACT
that Iowa beat IU in Carver-Hawkeye, less than 12 months ago.
Have the 2 teams changed that much? Has I.U. improved that much and has Iowa fallen off??
Me thinks not.
Iowa 77 I.U. 70
IU is a 6 point fav as of now.. Maybe my score is a little off. Those Vegas guys are scary good at setting the line somehow.
That's a tough spread. If it were less than five, I'd feel good about taking Indiana. But I do think Iowa will keep this close, so a six-point spread would probably cause me to back off.
to many are worried about PG play I am not
Iowa returns 5 of the top 6 scorers and 6 of the top 8, from last years team that beat Indiana, yes I know gatens is gone but Marble is back and has taken over with scoring avg of 15.7 ppg vs Gatens 15.2 ppg, White is now a established starter and is just coming off a Freshman AA season, this I owa team is not without its own star's.
Gesell 2 time Gatorade player of the year and capt. of the Nebraska Super State team and Mr. BB
Clemmons his running mate was rated as the #1 pg and 3rd best player and was named to the superstate Team in Michigan
Marble is this years team leading scorer
White a Fr AA and BT freshmen team member and is the 2nd leading scorer
Woodbury was awarded the NBPA TOP 100 MVP and was rated 39th overall by ESPN
all that ot means with 3 freshmen starting those that were starters last year are now coming off the bench, this gives Iowa a much deeper bench, rather than havong to rely on the Brom/Arch duo. sorry I am not worried about this game as Fran is the coach now and not Lick
I seem to remember the victory over IU last year was largely a consequence of Gatens shooting unconscious. He hit something like 6 of 6 treys. That performance really warped the IU defensive play. Without a similar performance, we will have a really tough time against IU this year.
We have the talent to play almost on a equal footing with IU The 6 point spread sounds about right to me. If we get hot, or one of our guys does a great Gatens imitation, we should win. But talent-wise, IU has the horses to beat us, heads up, even if they don't get a superhuman effort from anyone.
The perspective that makes me feel good about the coming Big Ten season is the stability and depth that we have developed. Last year, if Marble, Gatens, or Besabe had a bad game, we were sunk. Now we have other players who can step up and fill the voids. Unless we get a Ted Valentine hosing, foul trouble should not kill us. It can make the upset more difficult to pull off, but not impossible.
But the best part of following the Hawks this season is the expectation that no matter how we play in any one game, we can expect a great game on most nights and that means a lot more satisfying wins than we have enjoyed form our Hawks the last 6-8 years.
