I had cable but no Internet service all day (until 40 minutes after the game ended). Sorry I missed the live game thread.
This was an important win. In addition to being our first conference win, it was on the road and also Fran's first win against NW. The only other team he has never beaten is Ohio State.
Iowa was also a 1.5 point underdog tonight.
NW in the past few seasons killed us from long range (their only weapon), but not tonight as they went 5/29 (19%).
So sweet beating them so soundly tonight and on their floor.
IF Iowa lost to this NW team, I would have been VERY, VERY, VERY worried.
IF Iowa had the services of Devyn Marble on Thursday vs MSU, IOWA wins by 10.
That's all we learned today.
Oh one other thing...........Melsahn Basabe needs to be on the floor a lot more.
His line today was most impressive. 13 minutes. 5 for 6 from the field, some rebounds and a free throw.
Come on, Fran.......get this guy on the floor.
Pretty sure that Mel is going to get more PT soon.
'Texan by birth, Hawkeye by the Grace of God'
I'd also like to add that Woodbury shouldn't see as many minutes. He's just been struggling as of late, which is what I expected this season from him being a freshman in a tough conference. I do think he'll be a good player but until he consistently plays well I think Iowa just has better options. Not dogging on Woodbury, I just think McCabe and Basabe have done better lately and are more proven than Woodbury is at this point in the year.
Edit to say: Granted I think he needs a learning year and the experience will really help him in next years run for the tourny.

"I was brought in here to change the culture. I'm going to coach with passion" - Fran McCaffery.
The frosh in general had a sub-par outing today....they'll come around, just need to play thru it.
Agree about the HUGE-ness of this game. Looking at the schedule for the next 3 1/2 weeks shows that we really would have had our backs against the wall....(UW, @OSU, @PU, PSU, @MN, @UW)....even with Devin back at full strength.
I just hope this lopsided win gives the team a bit of it's swagger back, and it especially gives JO some confidence with his stroke.
Glad to see them come out and Roll NW in the 2nd half.
For about half of the minutes in the 3 prior games, we just didn't play well, imho.
I think this team can play better, for extended periods than they've shown, especially in
Big Ten play. And I hope the momentum carries thru to Saturday. Would love to see a
rested Hawkeye team really get after the badgers.
basabe has been playing pretty well, hasn't he. i expect he'll get some minutes from clemmons. i imagine the two point-guard experiment is about over. while neither point guard has played real well lately, clemmons has more turn overs and a couple of needless fouls that have limited his contribution--particularly on defense. actually, marble played several minutes at the point yesterday when gessel needed a break.
I've been saying the same about the two point guard system - it seems to have hurt Gossel too, maybe it's a confidence thing as I did read an interview with him expressing his unhappiness with the situation, but saying he would do what he is asked to do by the coaches. I really think Basabe needs to be in the starting line up. He has earned it.
Agree with you silver; I think the guard position is certainly a work-in-progress. A kind of fluid thing that fortunately has quite a lot of upside. You might even see Marble & Ogelsby starting at 1 & 2, with Mikey Gesell, Eric May and A Clemmons coming off the pine. Not really that surprising that the freshman, especially Anthony have lots to learn about the rigors of a BigTen schedule. (Just a bit different than you H.S. league....lol).
