I'm really looking forward to the game tonight. I know Iowa has struggled on the road, but I like their chances with a likely smaller crowd tonight. I think they have a good chance against the Cavaliers if they force the tempo and hit shots.
Iowa 66, UVA 59
It will be interesting to see what Iowa team shows up.......one singing "I Wanna' Go Home"
with their difficulties winning road games, or the season-seasoned team singing "New York, New York." I think the latter, and Aaron White will not let the team end it's season in Ol' Virginia. THROTTLE UP!
I think the trifecta of Dev, Basabe, and White is just too much for them. Basabe is definitely motivated since he wants to go home to NY. I will be cheering on while being unproductive and very distracted at work. Good thing I am good with the boss, lol.
I stopped by to start this thread, and SURPRISE!!!! Three of my favorite posters beat me to it already at 8:30AM in the morning of game day. Good job fellas.
I too expect Iowa to be in the game all the way with an excellent chance for the win. Besabe has been an animal. Marble is playing great. Gessell seems to be able to play with the foot injury close enough to his normal level to be a plus for the team. Cleamons has been pretty strong on defense, although he does seem to dribble into defensive strength and turn it over because he does not see the open man. White seems to sneak up and score and rebound very quietly. You don't realize how good a game he played until you look at the stat sheet. Our center triumvirate of Woodbury, Oleseni, and May are more than enough to match up with nearly every center we face. I like our defense and team intensity. The only real question is, "Will we be able to sink 40% of our shots?" If so, we are headed to New York. Bring it on!!!!!!!
I watched the Virginia vs St Johns game and think that this will be a very interesting and even match-up.
Kind of agree with WiscHawk, in that, Iowa needs to shoot it well to win at this unfriendly environment.
If we play solid team defense, (as have we have been most nights) then, on offense.......... it's also going to take someone else, like
Mike Gesell, Aaron White, Gabe Olaseni, Anthony Clemmons or Melsahn Basabe to have a
10-15 pt night and open things up for Devyn. I'm sure they've scouted the Hawkeyes well and
seen that if you can contain Devyn (see IU & Mich State games), then you can control
Iowa. Let's hope 'Whitey' breaks out, as does Melsahn and we get out of there with the W!

Yes, Virginia, there is an Iowa!
Kinda nervous about this game on the road. It's a winnable game, but which Iowa team shows up will determine the outcome.
Tipoff at 7 p.m. (Eastern).
Game on ESPN2.
Virginia favored by 4.
Let's Go Hawks!
in the ncaa tournament the difference between holding a second seed or third seed doesn't mean very much in a head to head match up of 2 vs 3. however, in this nit the organizational choice to give uva a second seed might be the difference in deciding who goes on to msg and the li'l final four. the teams look pretty evenly matched. the home court advantage tonight might not be as great as it was for an acc game, but might be just enough for them. geez, the cavs have an impressive record at home. the hawks will need their best effort of the year to win--and that's tough on the road, particularly if fouls start to dictate the front line rotation.
Interesting read...I love how "UVA IS SO MUCH MORE ATHLETIC" than Iowa...enjoy.
EDIT: I especially love the.."they won't beat us with talent" line.
EDIT #2: Reading some of the other threads...they are already lamenting the fact that they will have to play Maryland again in MSG. LOL...anybody got a bulletin board to post some of this?
On Wednesday night, Virginia (23-11) will host Iowa (23-12) in the quarter finals of the NIT. The game will tip off at 7pm and will be televised nationally on ESPN2.

That article was clearly written by someone who has watched Iowa play for about 15 minutes total this season.
I fully expect there to be a large amount of Hawkeye fans at John Paul Jones arena tonight. Hopefully they are loud enough to keep the Hawks going. I think Iowa is more talented, top to bottom. If we get Iowa @ Wisconsin(1st 35 minutes) I think Iowa beats Virginia tonight. But if we get last 20 minutes @ Nebraska, we'll be in for a long night.
I don't find the article all that offensive. What the author doesn't point out is that Iowa is a much better defensive team now than in the Virginia Tech game, and I'm convinced that if there was a rematch, Iowa would win handily.
Other than that, I agree with the majority of the statements. Simply put, the Hawks are going to have to demonstrate improved road play to win this game, especially on offense. Gesell and Clemmons are going to have to be stronger with the ball and deal with pressure better, and Woodbury will have to be smarter and show he has learned how to use his size.
To me the x-factor in this game will be the benches. If McCabe, Olaseni, May and Oglesby out-play UVA's bench, we will be in good shape, particularly if we can get their starters in foul-trouble (especially their PG). It's also imperative to hold the TOs to less than 12/13 and shoot at least 43%. Otherwise, it could be a disappointing night.

Iowa's strength is it's talented bench and the ability to substitute often with little drop-off in talent or tempo. I hope they use it. That means fresh legs all the way around all the time and no fear of fouling out so they can get physical if needed. Hawks need to play hard, run hard, run often, and run up the score to prevent any 1?-point comeback by Virginia at home.
The golden crystal paw ball says it will be Iowa by 11, 76- 65. If lousy officiating tonight, make it 76- 72. The paw ball has never been wrong.
6 hours till tip-off. Time to make a beer run.
It will be a competitive game for sure. As long as we don't get rattled and can start off fast, then I think we have a great possibility of winning. UVA has a great home record for sure.
Need Marble to have another huge game. He has been really sharp the last few games! Let's do this hawks!!!
We need this one! I wanna see my Hawks here in in New York!
Without looking it up, anyone recall the last time we played in Madison Square Garden?
Was it the 1999 Coaches vs. Cancer shootout at the start of the season? Iowa beat #1 UConn, the defending national champ, on Thursday night and lost to Stanford on Friday night.
Correct, and Alford's first two games at Iowa.
After that UConn game, we thought we hit the jackpot.
Hope I'm in your top five at least.
please win, thx

Does the winner player the Maryland Terrapins, new addition to the BigTen?
That would be Awesome.
Of course, yes, it is a tremendous challenge for this young team. Fact of the matter, is that..
the younger guys have NOT played well on the road. (Mike Gesell has done admirably in games like Purdue, Wisc, MN),
but I cannot expect much out of Woody or A Clemmons, on the road, based on their games on road in BigTen, thus far.
That being said, I do think we find a way to win. This Iowa team is 9-3 in its last 12 games. They're finding ways to win.
They did have a rough outing in that stretch at IU, but not too bad. They should have won at Nebraska and against
MSU, where in both games, they lead most of the game.
Yes, 9pm on Tuesday at the Garden, tons of Terps have already bought tickets. Would be nice to play someone new that doesn't play a garbage brand of basketball like UVA.
I try to be realistic in my posts, but after reading up on these guys I think we have a good chance of beating them. I haven't watched them at all this season, but the experts say that if they can stop our outside shot or get a big lead early, we won't have a chance against them. That's how they beat Duke, NC St, Wisc. and some of their other high profile opponents. However, they also get frazzled by tough defense, and could lose confidence quickly if Iowa, a much faster team, can show that their slow-down offense won't work against our speed and depth. In other words, we need to win the psychological war, which they have an advantage on given their home record already mentioned by several posters here. I think we can do it. See you guys later tonight.
And I'm walking distance to the Garden.
Whens the last time you beat this garbage brand of basketball?
