Iowa linebacker Jim Poggi's father, Biff, is the head coach at Gilman, one of the top high school programs in Maryland. In addition to producing multiple BCS players every year at Gilman, Biff has a son currently playing at Iowa, and a 2013 son (Henry) currently committed to Michigan. Here are some of his recent comments on Twitter, which I thought were pretty interesting. You can check out his Twitter page at https://twitter.com/BiffPoggi, but here are the two most interesting tweets.
Biff poggi @BiffPoggi
Until the #Big 10 learns to recruit like the #SEC it will be an irrelevant conference. Good news for #Ohio State
Recruiting is a process that takes constant work. The lifeblood of any team. Players win games. #SEC . The reason they as a conference win
Not even taking into account the fact that he has one son playing at a B1G school not named Ohio State, and another one that will be playing at Ohio State's top rival within a matter of months, I have no idea why any high school coach would publicly bash an entire conference like that. Just not a very smart move if he's looking out for the best interests of his current and future players at Gilman, as he should be doing everything he can to build the best relationship possible with every college program so as to maximize his players' options. And then, when you consider where Jim is playing, and where Henry is committed to play, why knowingly put yourself in position to possibly ruffle the feathers of their coaches?
I was about to post something just like this. I was wondering if that's actually Poggi's account, but I don't use Twitter, so I'm sure you know.
It appears to be, yes.
i might be wrong, but i thought jim poggi was medically dq'd. wasn't daddy poggi a parent spokesman during the rhabdo uproar. i think i recall him being pretty supportive of the coaches at the time
Maybe he grew up a fan of an SEC team, who knows. I bet he roots for his sons to do good every day but his point stands. Look at the SEC teams and their classes and results compared to the BIG.
"I was brought in here to change the culture. I'm going to coach with passion" - Fran McCaffery.
Jim is still on the roster as of today.
I wouldn't think twice if a regular fan or member of the media said stuff like that, because it's at least an arguable position to take. But even if it's what he truly believes, I don't think it was a smart thing to tweet, considering where his sons are/will be, and the fact that the program he coaches is making a name for itself by producing BCS players every year. If I were a current player at Gilman, or the parent of one, I'd be pretty upset with him for these comments.
Can't disagree with that. Hopefully it doesn't push coaches away from some of his players.
It's him. And if it wasn't, with the firestorm it's kicked up, you'd think he'd be publicly denying it was him. He hasn't.
It was a stupid ass thing to say considering he's about to find his school smack dab in the middle of prime B1G recruiting country once Maryland joins the conference. He needs to stop acting like he's Henry's dad and start thinking more like a high school coach lobbying to get his players scholarships wherever they want to go, not where he wants them to go or not go.
Middle-aged men who tweet. Can someone please explain that to me?
I remember during Jim's recruitment it was stated the KF and Poggi Sr were buddies. Didnt we also land a DL outta Gilman?
Anyway pretty strong comments on his part. But the fact is that I cant argue with his view.
DL i was thrying to think of was Cooper. Dematha
Anthony Ferguson, D-line, was also out of Gilman in the 2010 class but he left after one year.
Social media is for everyone, I mean 90 year olds are on Facebook, I have no issues with people people doing it but to say that is just stupid.
Gold medals aren't really made of gold. They're made of sweat, determination, and a hard-to-find alloy called guts.
There probably isn't a B1G program that hasn't recruited Gilman players in the past. They came to Cincinnati last September and got their asses kicked by Moeller, which won Ohio's D-1 championship. Moeller has several players going to B1G schools.
Again, I'm shaking my head. He must've eaten some bad BBQ at Dreamland outside Tuscaloosa and started hallucinating.
Todd........why have you heard rumors that he may not be some time?
I'm waiting for him to get on the field.......was hoping he was the next, Pat Angerer, at Iowa.
'Texan by birth, Hawkeye by the Grace of God'
There have been rumors that Henry Poggi has been looking at Alabama or maybe his dad wanted him to look at them. IDK but i saw something like that on the Mich board.
No, I was replying to a post that (at least to me) seemed to question whether Jim was still a part of the program.
I think there's at least some truth to those rumors, but it still wasn't a smart move for Biff to tweet what he did.
If he feels that way, why did he let his sone commit to B1G teams? I'm sure Vandy and the Mississippi schools would have given them a look.
O of course not. I just think there might be a weird correlation there.
Technically Anthony Ferguson didn't "leave." He's not on the team anymore but to my knowledge he's still enrolled at the University of Iowa today, he found something outside of football that he wanted to dedicate his time to and I for one at least applaud him for choosing what he wanted over what would be easy. I'm not saying you don't applaud him as well, just throwing this info out there in case you didn't know.
Sine Missione -- Never be a spectator for unfairness or stupidity, argue for arguments sake; the grave will give plenty of time for silence.
As to Biff Poggi's comments, stupid people will do stupid things and will inherently be too stupid to correct their previous stupid mistakes.
From what i've seen, Michigan approached him about playing offense instead of defense and it didn't sit well. Both him and his father went silent for awhile, and now he starts tweeting stuff like that?
If you don't like my opinion, at least you can enjoy the view
I heard Michigan coaches recently asked Henry (surprised him) to switch sides of the ball and that he was upset over it. There is now a rumor that he's looking around. It may be true and his dad may be just trying to put the blame or pressure on the conference to step up. Who knows at this point, but how can any conference out recruit another, you can't offer kids things and your not supposed to be lying to the kids. There are big time rules in recruiting and I thought the coaches are already pushing them as far as they can. I don't get this at all! I'm probably ignorant to whats really going on.
FWIW, that twitter account is followed by Pogi family, so I think it's real. Maybe it was hacked, that has happened. I could see a college/HS kid trying to cause trouble
I wanted to add that it is being reported that Henry Pogi is now visiting Alabama this weekend. It might be true that Michigan asked Henry to switch sides of the ball and that he got upset. You don't recruit a guy and one week before the kid signs, you say "I want you to now play on the other side of the line.
His Dad may be a man of his word and he might be trying to deal with this, having a son publicly go back on his. At this point it's just speculation.
