Love him, can't stand him or are you indifferent?
This post was edited by Todd Worly 13 months ago
He's a real phoney. Met him once here in NY.
Even if had not been a real jerk, I find him annoying.
Can't stand him
Used to like him as a kid, his passion was just incredible to me. Now that I'm a little bit older I find his voice incredibly annoying and his passion to be rather fake. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure he loves everything about college basketball, but he's really annoying now. Brings up Duke in every game he does.
"I was brought in here to change the culture. I'm going to coach with passion" - Fran McCaffery.
If Vitale, Skip Bayless, and Chris Berman were to suddenly lose their jobs and never be on my TV again, I would miss Vitale the least.
Enjoyed him initally, but Vitale wore off quickly. His obsession with Duke was too much to take, as well as his switching praises for whatever team was ahead at the time. Many broadcasters do that to keep their audience, but I find it most annoying.
The worst combo is when he is paired up with Musberger.
Earlier today, when checking up on the ACC final, I had to hit mute every time.
Can't really stand him. He has great passion, but he's too much. I'd much rather listen to Gus Johnson, who is enthusiastic, but doesn't over do it. ESPN needs to dump Vitale. He's an east coast homer.
He's a shill for Duke and Notre Dame. He actually is a private school elitist. He has no reference point other than the east coast and he was rightfully fired in his days at Detroit Mercy and Pistons. He is a front runner and a guy that only pumps the winners. My most enjoyable year is when his vocal chords were compromised and he was off the air. Does not even know that there is anything West of the Mississippi.
Seth Davis is even a lower form of scum to me... a comedian, Duke blue blood who only got a job because daddy got him one...
I saw that and almost shot myself. Lucky my wife grabbed the remote while I was gagging.
Before there was space or time there was rock and roll.
I can't stand Vitale. The guy loves ONE team... Duke
It's time Dick retires.
Dickie is intolerable!
I'm with a lot of you on this. I really admire his passion for basketball in general, and college basketball in particular. But all he ever says is how great of a coach everyone is, how great of a player everyone is, etc. For recently-fired coaches that are currently in broadcasting, but want to eventually return to the sidelines, I understand that approach, because they don't want to burn any bridges. But for someone like Vitale, it doesn't make much sense, and makes him sound much less genuine. And every year after the NBA Draft, he'll rip all the NBA teams for not taking some college player that he loved as early as he wanted, and then Vitale usually turns out to be wrong.
Wasn't it Lute who gave him the nickname "Dukie V."?
Used to enjoy his passion and, honestly, back in the 80s, he did a lot to put college basketball and ESPN on the map.
However, he hasn't evolved. His schtick has gotten old and tiresome and his obvious bias for ACC basketball, particularly Puke, has made him almost intolerable to listen to.
Like others, I kind of liked him at first for a little while, but that wore off quickly. I can't stand the sound of his voice now.
Life is hard. It's really hard if you're stupid.
His 15 minutes were up decades ago.
