As I see it...
*Penn State will most likely slide down a group after a couple years of sanctions settle in.
Hmm, I guess you all agree with me....
Iowa= Group D
Maybe that will let Iowa slide UP, but not next year. It looks pretty thin.
Trust me...I was waffling, but the homer in me just wouldn't allow it.
Something tells me a neutral observer would probably see it as you do jed.
I would switch Indiana and Iowa. They were better than us.
That's who I was 'waffling' with....but I took a 4-year look at the programs, and IU just isn't quite there yet.
The pecking order at the end of next year could very well see that swap take place...
Indiana beats our worst team in over a decade by a field goal and they're automatically better than us? Get real, as much criticism and change that this team needs, we were 21 points (1 point better than each of the 5 games where we lost by 7 points or less) from being 9-3. Did we ultimately get there? No. Should we have? IMO, yes. Does it REALLY make us worse than 4-8 Indiana who lost by MUCH more points in most of their losses than Iowa? Hell the f no. It's a bad year that is now over. Now it's time for all of us to get over it too.
Sine Missione -- Never be a spectator for unfairness or stupidity, argue for arguments sake; the grave will give plenty of time for silence.
2010 = very big disappointing year
2011 = very mediocre year
2012 = very bad year
Sorry, but I see a trend there, and not a lot of reason for optimism that it will dramatically reverse itself in 2013....to call this just "a bad year" is deluding yourself.
2010 - Yes it was very disappointing. I guess teams like Oklahoma, Notre Dame, USC, Texas, Michigan, etc. have never had disappointing seasons with very talented teams.
2011/2012 - The only differences between this year and last year is that we lost 5 important players to the NFL draft last year and 5 more to NFL UFA contracts. These are the years we knew were going to come with the number of defections we were hit with on the DL and with the lack of fulfilled promise of talented players on both sides of the ball. YOU are deluding yourself if you didn't remember that Iowa is a developmental program who rarely has players who can come in and play immediately out of high school and when we miss on talented players like even the mighty Alabama's and Ohio State's miss on every year, it hurts us worse than them because we don't have a plethora of 4-5* players to simply replace them if they don't produce up to expectations.
The last 2 or 3 recruiting classes have brought in some of the most talented players we have ever brought in at Iowa and we have obviously done far more with less. Give these guys some time to develop before saying there isn't much reason for optimism. It's obvious Ferentz can't be bought out of his contract without a major effort from some big-time donors, so give the team another 1-2 years before saying there's no reason for optimism.
Actually, that's EXACTLY the reason for not seeing much room for optimism.
This program is GROUP C, borderline GROUP D....just two years ago they were a solid GROUP B...the trend is downward, and barring a dramatic shift in Ferent's game day philosophy...(ie more risk taking and clock management)...I see very little reason to feel this past season was an exception and not closer to the norm moving forward.
Yes because there was a dramatic shift in Ferentz's game day philosophies during the 2002 and 2009 seasons....
Did you feel the same way in 2000? Bet you didn't 2 years later in 2002.
Did you feel the same way in 2007? Bet you didn't 2 years later in 2009.
Moral of the story, you don't have any more than purely reactionary feelings to back up your "argument." Take a step back from the diving board and I think you might understand what I'm saying instead of picking 1 or 2 sentences of what I say and ignoring everything else.
Your really debating with me using Ferentz 2002 vs Ferentz 2012?
Question: Do you think the game has changed at all since 2002?
Question: Do you think calling a 4 yard out play when we need 6+ yards for a first down has been a successful strategy the past two years?
Question: How do you feel Ferentz's clock management has progressed (or digressed) since 2002?
Question: Do you think our defensive style could use a bit of an overhaul?
Question: We are in severe need of pass rushers and speed on offense (RB/WR)....how has our last two recruiting classes addressed these deficiencies?
Question: How has Bielema gone to back to back Rose Bowls and Ferentz hasn't sniffed one appearance yet?
Question: Are you satisified with this programs overall success since 2006? In particular, the closing gap in talent/success between Iowa and teams like Iowa State and Wisconsin?
These are just a few, and I've got a lot more where those came from.
If all depends on how you're looking at it - the last four years, just this year, moving forward, etc.
I think Northwestern probably deserves to move up to group B at this point. They went 9-3 this year, and could/should have won all three games they lost. They didn't play Wisconsin or Ohio State (sound familiar?), but they were *good enough* to go 12-0 this year. Not to derail this thread, but Pat Fitzgerald deserves a lot more publicity than he gets.
As for Iowa, it all depends on how we're looking at it. Historically, I'd probably put Iowa right on the border between group B and C. This year, it'd probably be group D. And moving forward, until the results start improving on the field, I think group C is fair.
Question for you, have you actually read or understood ANYTHING that I've said in my 3 previous posts?
I'm not going to waste my time turning this into a personal argument with you because you are quite OBVIOUSLY either completely ignoring my points or you are too biased with your reactionary judgement to actually understand anything that I've told you. Your first statement in this quote is from way out of left field where you're making up things I'm saying, you continue on to just make flat-out false statements, and you give an overall feel of possibly not having a clue of anything that's actually happened with Iowa recruiting and possibly the program as a whole.
Have fun continuing to put on this farce and please feel free to continue downvoting me for actually thinking in a logical and non-reactionary manner.
The Terps are the youngest team in the country and had all of our QBs hurt. Our WRs are going to be by far the best in the conference when we join and I think we will surprise a lot of people.
For the record, I haven't down-voted you at all in this thread.
Also, you haven't addressed my questions.....
You make a valid point about NW...they're definitely on the B-C border.
Welcome to the family terps!
No disrespect intended...I based your pecking order placement on how Maryland has done the past four years, and in a conference not nearly as tough. I hope you guy kick ass while you remain in the ACC and bring a swagger when you finally begin play in the B1G. It sounds like you have the same curse with your QBs that Iowa does with its RBs. Let's hope that finally ends for both of us starting in the lucky year of 2013.
I look at the 2010 thru 2012 years as a story of reinventing the Iowa Football Staff. Norm's absence in 2010 had a huge impact. Coach K unintentionally sabotaged our Dline depth and that came home to roost the last 2 years. Our offense has chronically underperformed for a good 8 years, since Brad banks graduated. When KOK took off for warmer climes, it was the perfect chance to rework the offense. Unfortunately the first run at the reinvention was a 100% flop. The 2012 OC Flop and the chronic Dline problems was a combo that we could not overcome this year. That does not make this a weak, bad program. We stubbed our toe, figuratively. Now Kirk needs to take a second shot at the OC and get that back to where we should be. The defense will come around as more of the underclassmen grow into their bodies and become run stuffers, instead of speed bumps.
I don't have any inside knowledge of the Iowa program. But a coach does not show the kind of chops to earn what Kirk earns without the drive to succeed from within. This season has to be eating at Kirk 24/7. He knows the solution has to start with a much stronger offense performance from the staff. We may need a few more horses. But the horses we have are better than we what we showed on the field this season. Kirk will fix it. It may take more than 1 year to get back to hoodwinking the Group A Big Boys and embarrassing the Group D floor sweepings. We were there. We will be there again. Nothing is quite so sweet as the prize, once tasted, then lost and regains. I look for Iowa to be ranked by seasons end in 2014, and a program looking up starting next September, BOOK IT!
Upvoted for a very good post. Now let's hope Ferentz does what he knows is necessary and get's us a good, young OC. I still have trouble believing Ferentz will do it until he actually does, but if there was ever a time to show he can continue leading this program back to success, now is the time.
And you still refuse to quit ignoring 90% of what I've said above.
Technically speaking however, I did answer your questions before you ever asked them by the fact that I told you your arguments were completely reactionary and based on no real fact. Also for the record, this "Question: How has Bielema gone to back to back Rose Bowls and Ferentz hasn't sniffed one appearance yet?" is the question of a troll who is either trying entirely to infuriate people or just flat out ignorance. Now I also told you before that since you're refusing to even give any attention or thought to most of what I've said that I will not be baited into this turning into a personal attack, so keep at it all you want, but I'm not wasting any further time on you.
it's sad that you can't defend your point of view and instead call people trolls...but that's pretty much what "chuggers" do.
welcome to my ignore list.
and for the record, i did give you a down vote on that reply
Maybe he doesn't get more publicity because he is a dick. I know a few people that have met him and they all said the same thing, that he is a huge db who is beyond cocky.
So is EVERY coach in the Sec and in the B1G (Meyers, Hoke???; Bielema, Pelini, Dantonio, Fitzgerald) and 6-7 in the Big 12!
Just maybe we need a Dick for a coach instead of KF!
I personally am not for it, but that might be what it takes?
We tried that in basketball a while back and enjoyed some decent success, but eventually ended up running him out of town because he didn't 'fit in' with Iowa's humble, modest, unpretentious culture.
