I know we discussed this back in the fall, but figured I'd bring up the topic once again with spring practice approaching. For the sake of this thread, let's assume that Iowa has seven home games per year. In how many of those games would you like to see Iowa wear throwback uniforms (honoring a team from the past) or alternate uniforms?
Let me offer the first response. I like the throwback uniforms. But the "specialness" of throwbacks is lost when there are more than 1 throwback game each season. I'd like to see the throwback uniforms as a declaration of respect for a quality ooc opponent (like ISU) or a meaningful Big 10 Game (Not Indiana, Purdue, or Illinois.) Maybe use the throwback uniforms every other year... or anytime we host the Gophers, since that is a big, meaningful game whenever we face them. Just do something to make the throwback games "special" like we do with the Black out games and The PSU Striped games.
As I proof read my post, I had another thought. Don't, under any circumstances, ever use the throwback uniforms for a game between Iowa and any of the new additions to the Big 10. Throwback uniforms for an Iowa vs Maryland or Rutgers game would be the ultimate oxymoron move.

One throwback and one new alternative jersey that the players vote on. Also I'd recommend the throwback to be week two against Mizz State.... give the game some kind of buzz
Before the traditionalist chime in I'll remind you we are wearing knock off stealer jerseys as is and have gone through many different helmet & jersey styles since the history of the hawkeyes.

I don't mind having one of each, each season, but the alternate crap that Iowa put out last season for Vet's Day was terrible
FU...that's "STEELERS", and the whole idea that Coach Fry wanted to project is, "If you wanna be a winner, you gotta look like a winner"...which is why we don't look like the Browns....MUHAHAHA!
Personally, I have always liked the Iowa "script" helmets. Don't ask me why.
I agree with Fuisu. We should do one game throwback, one game alternative jersey. I think that the games should be big games however. I think Iowa needs to do the throwback and alternative when we get a night game or a nationally televised game. Kids like the different jerseys and the bigger games might be the time to best use the jerseys.
Personally the helmet from 1972-1973 on fuisu's photo is my favorite. Simple but pretty cool.
One game a year only. Don't mess with a classic look. I dislike the Oregonification of college football.
This comment is definitely ban-worthy...
You've all made some great points here. Personally, I think Iowa's regular uniform is one of the better looking uniforms in college football in terms of color scheme and design. So because of that, at least in terms of impressing recruits, I think there's less of a need for Iowa to change things up than there is for other schools to do so.
I like the uniform shake up once or twice a year. I like FU's idea, a throwback and then a new age spacesuit. There are so many cool options with those colors, all black pants and jerseys with the black helmets for a home game would be awesome I think. And some type of graphic in yellow that isn't too obnoxious. Or even all yellow pants and jerseys with the black helmets. Make the black a matte finish instead of glossy. I think the players dig it, and they should have some say. But, to everyone's point, the originals are still great, don't misunderstand me. I just think a little flash and flare for a game or two can't hurt.
