  • Rough season for the wildcats. Injuries and academic problems really defined this season. I thought Carmody was a decent coach. I will be interested to see how the direction of the program next year...They could be on their way to what Iowa has endured for the last years.

Yep. Makes no sense whatsoever IMO. That's not a very attractive job, so it's not like they're going to have big names banging down the door. And they just got rid of the best coach in school history at the end of ONE very unlucky, injury-plagued season. It's not like that had happened three years in a row. I have a ton of respect for the players and teams in all sports there, but can't see the rationale for this move unless there was something going on behind the scenes that we don't know about.

It seems they have been thinking it was going to happen, especially listening to the commentators from Thursday night

Agree with you and Buck. Terrible move for them, the could have been a decent team next year.

  • It was a bad move, no good coach will want it. Permanent doormat for the B1G for the next several line of coaches...

Oh I hate them too, just saying it was a bad move for them to make, does it upset me? Absolutely not

Yep, and that's ridiculous. I have a ton of respect for the athletes at that school, so that's not a school I'd root against, but the AD (or whoever ultimately made this decision) is due for some bad karma in terms of the bottom falling out on that program now.

I would've understood to a certain extent if he'd proven that his program had hit a plateau and he couldn't take it any further. But they'd been steadily progressing until this year, and the poor season this year was obviously due in large part to losing half their team. Now if he'd stayed, had his full complement of players and had another poor season next year, then I'm fine with making a move. But this is just stupid.

Completely agree. Unless there is some information to which we are not privy, this firing makes zero sense. Carmody has proven that when he has the players, he can coach, and he seems like a high-character guy. Not only did he have to deal with injuries to his best current players, the team also has lost it's best individual performers to graduation the last two seasons. Bunk move by the A.D.

  • It seems like I am going to geat beat up for this but I think it was a good move. Just by looking at the number, even though he was the most successful coach in NW history, his record was 192-210 in 13 seasons. That averages to about 14 wins a year. He NEVER made an NCAA tournament in those years either. Hell, even IU football made a bowl game is those 13 years. I know the faciliteis need upgraded and all of that but he should have been able to do more. I dont want to hear about academics or anything becasue their football team gets players, with crappy stadium also, and competes in the conference. I think if they get the right up and coming coach and possibly overpay some they could turn into a Minnesota or someone like that. I dont think they would win the title but no reason they shouldnt be able to make the NCAA tournament. Just my opnion, dont beat me up 2 bad.

OldOaken247 on twitter..... I say a lot of stuff you wont care about.

  • Not fair with top players out. Can you imagine this year's team without Marble, White and Gesell?

but I guess it's time. AD said that with only one year left, and an extension is not warranted... Not good for recruiting. And it looks like Chris Collins (asst HC at Duke) maybe a top candidate.

Great post, and I appreciate you taking the opposing viewpoint. I just see this season as a throwaway year since so many people were out this year. So if they were going to make a move, why not do it at the end of last year? And what could have been the nail in the coffin this year for Carmody?

Good point. I made a post last year on tGB about how I think he should have been fired at the end of last year but people made the point that he had some good players coming back. Not sure what the nail in the coffin was this year other than the 10 game losing streak or something.

We've discussed this on this site in relation to Fran, but I've always felt there are some coaches that are great at turning a program around, and there are some coaches that are great at taking a good program and turning it into an elite program. Not many coaches are great at doing both of those. So if the administration legitimately felt that Carmody had basically maxed out and wasn't the one to lead them to the next level, I'm fine with that. I just don't think anything that happened this year could have been proof of that.

  • I've got to agree with Oaken. If Duke and Stanford and Vandy can be respectable or better, then so can NW. But it will take a commitment by the administration to make it happen, along the lines of Hayden Fry in 1979 at Iowa. Upgrades to Welsh-Ryan Arena, better practice facilities, an up-and-coming coach, etc. NW is right in the middle of a rich recruiting ground. It could happen.
