Can History Repeat as #6 Seed?

  • IA is the only school to win the B1G tournament in four days as a #6 in 2001, can IA do it again in 2013? Only OSU and MSU has won it three times, followed by IA, IL, and WI have won it twice; Purdue has won it once. IA will play Thursday about 8 p.m. (ESPN2) Central against #11 Northwestern. If IA wins first round, MSU awaits them on Friday about the same time on BTN channel. If IA wins against MSU, then the other bracket of Pur/NE vs. OSU will play against them on Saturday (CBS). I think IA does have a very favorable schedule to make it to the B1G championship game on Sunday.

    Lets Go Hawks!!!!

Iowa has shown that it can beat anyone on any given day, so I really wouldn't be shocked to see the Hawkeyes put it together and win four straight. I wouldn't predict it to happen, but it's certainly possible. It definitely wouldn't hurt for one or more of the top four seeds got knocked off on Friday to make Iowa's path easier.

You're always so very diplomatic, Todd. :). Good for you. And I LOVE my friend Lao's optimism. We've been friends for a long time and I'd be homeless now if I had put money on his predictions! :)

Lao: look for a post from me in April or May to meet in a bar in Des Moines when I come to visit my son. I'll buy, especially if your predictions comes true! Heck, i'll buy for everyone in the bar, GLADLY and with a big smile on my face.

lol Thanks! This really is one of those teams that can beat anyone or lose to anyone though. The key is to play at a high level four days in a row, which isn't easy to do, but it's possible.

Another thing to remember is the fact that, with the B1G being so loaded with good teams and with how physical this season has been, I think Iowa with its depth has an advantage in being a "fresher" team. In watching the top teams recently, they are all a tad slower than from the start of the B1G season, while I think Iowa is actually getting its second wind. Particularly from our bigs.

HL, I think you can just sent me an email directly... Sure, I'll be glad to see in person. Just ask BBR, we have met for two years when IA plays in Wells Fargo Arena. IA as a #6 seed is very favorable per Gazette article: http://thegazette.com/2013/03/10/6th-seeds-have-won-big-at-big-ten-tourney/

As noted, IA is the only team that won it in four days, others may have reach the final game but ran out of gas.

  • HL- more importantly, you should check with Mrs. Lao instead. She's the one that wears the pants in the family. =)

Iowa has a favorable seed. Played MSU and OSU much closer than vs Mich. And match up is not great vs Indy period. And playing Wis these days is like playing ISU. Doesn't get you very far.

It's payback time vs MSU. The bigs are ready to match up against Nix and Payne. With Marble this time and determined May, Appling and Harris won't be a factor. Oh, let's take care of the Cats first. =)

  • While I don't think Iowa will win it all, I think they'll win a couple which should get them in the dance. If they get a signature win over a top 15 team in MSU on a neutral court I think that will jump them into the tourney. We are playing pretty good basketball right now, especially defensively and getting Gesell back is only going to help. Hopefully he is 100%. Can't wait for Thursday.

That's a good point, especially when you consider that none of Iowa's bigs have really played a high amount of minutes game in and game out. That's definitely one advantage to Fran playing so many guys per game. And, assuming Gesell returns for the conference tourney, he should bring another set of fresh legs to the backcourt.

I know, I was just kidding, Lao. Anything is possible. Realistically, I doubt that IA can get by MS. Some folks on the board seem to have written MS off just because we had a chance to beat them here at home. Although, I also have to admit that ever since the first game after Chris Street passed away and we came back from a 17 point deficit to beat them in the last 2 minutes, I think an invisible force helps us in games against Mich St. For God's sake, even Lick beat them!

And I don't believe anyththing THAIHAWK says! I'm sure, you like me, have a couple of pairs of pants laying around somewhere around the house. My problem is, I can never find mine. :)

  • MSU is a possible win. Izzo doesn't put a lot of stock in the conference tourney, saving his powder for the Big Dance. Iowa, however, has to beat MSU to get in.
