CBS talk

  • Said on CBS yesterday between games:

Sean's last 4 in included Iowa. He said Iowa "will lose to Indiana tonight but will win their last 2 at home and win 1 or 2 in the Big 10 tournament and are in."

Other talking head (didn't catch the name): "Sean, you're hallucinating."

  • If IA wins their last two games and beat 2 teams in the tourney, NCAA will not deny them a chance to dance..... Too much momentum, too many wins (22 w's), too good of a conference.... One win in the tourney could be questionable, but still feasible.

Honestly, I worry about our two remaining games. This team has shown a tendency to play below their capability when playing teams they should beat.

  • This team has also played its best basketball at home. I like us to win the last two. I think we need 2 in the BTT and we are dancing at an 8-10 seed.

  • I thought it was Gottlieb and Seth Davis was the one who told him he was off base.

    Gottlieb had Iowa in?

Maybe it was Seth and not Sean.

I watched so many games yesterday on so many networks.

Whoever it was the word was "hallucinating."

  • I see no reason a 22 win Iowa team shouldn't be in the dance if they can get a win over a Top 4 B1G team in the BTT.

Yeah, he said it both Saturday before Indiana and Sunday. He said Iowa will be in after beating Illinois, Nebraska, and winning 1 game in the BTT.

Well, I sure hope so, but he doesn't seem to have a lot of company with that theory. So many more seem to think Iowa would need to win two in the tourney (which would likely mean beating a Top 10 Michigan team) in order to get in.

It does help that some of the other bubble schools a head of Iowa lost this weekend, including Villanova.

  • I think Iowa can sneak in with 3 straight wins and another win or a close loss. Man, that Nebraska loss really screwed us. If they'd won that and were 10-8 and a win in the BTT, I think they are in for sure. Frustrating.

Completely agree with that last part regarding a 10-8 Iowa team being a lock with a win in the conference tourney. In order to have a realistic shot of making it at this point, I think Iowa obviously needs to win these next two games, but there also has to be what would objectively be considered a great win in the conference tourney. The earliest that could happen is in the second round against someone like MSU, Michigan, IU, Ohio State, etc. IMO, that would could get Iowa onto the bubble, but I'm still not sure it'd be enough, especially if there are some upsets in mid-major conference tournaments. Win that conference semi's game, which would likely also be against one of those top B1G teams, and then I think Iowa has a better than even shot of getting in.

Did it ever. It affected one regular poster to the point he hasn't been back since.

Anyway, we can't cry over spilt milk any more. Illinois will be a real test. Win that one and we will be in good shape. And no way in hell we lose to Nebraska at home.

That's my thing, too. I'm by no means a bracketologist, but the fact that Iowa isn't even in anyone's first four out category right now is alarming, because those guys are generally pretty accurate. IMO, home wins over Illinois and Nebraska won't improve Iowa's standing that much, and neither will a first round conference tourney win over Northwestern, Nebraska, etc. Would a second round win over one of those top 3-4 teams be enough to put Iowa in? That's a great question, and I really don't know.

  • The other "guru", Joe Lunardi, not only does not have us in his "next 4 in" list, he doesn't even have us in is "next 4 after that" list. But I think that we fall into the "need 3 more wins" category with him too.

  • Very difficult situation to predict. As Todd eluded to, a lot will depend upon how the other conference tourneys play out. If a team that is a lock based upon the regular season loses, and a team that had no chance wins an automatic bid, the selection process could kill our chances. Assuming that doesn't happen, I think Iowa is in with two conference tourney wins, but all bets are off with just one (doubtful, but we could conceivably sneak in).

Yea, Lunardi had Iowa the 9th team out as of last night.

  • I have a feeling that this team can make a run in the BTT. They have shown the ability to play with anyone and have lost some close ones. Could be the suprise of the tournament. JMHO!!

  • Anyone see this recent article placing as a play-in team against TN from the Gazette? http://thegazette.com/2013/03/07/ncaa-resumes-how-iowa-isu-stack-up/

Also, I read from the live chat with Pat Harty that a 2014 prospect gave a secret verbal for BB, anyone in the know of who it could be?

Tyler Ulis.... Just guessing. I remember someone posting something about this kid last year on HawkCentral.

That's an interesting projection when just above that segment, it says Iowa still has a good amount of work to do. Are they predicting that Iowa will make it to Sunday in Chicago?

"Prognosis: The lack of a big road win coupled with a subpar non-conference schedule means Iowa must do some work in the Big Ten tournament. A defining second-round league tournament win gets the Hawkeyes in the conversation. A semifinal victory probably gets them in."

And I actually agree with their projection. Assuming Iowa beats Nebraska on Saturday, I think the Hawkeyes bare close to locks to make it in with three wins in Chicago. IMO, one or zero wins leaves Iowa on the outside looking in, and two wins makes it a toss-up.

  • a win against Nebraska and 3 wins at BTT and they are in for sure. I think they are in with 2 wins at BTT. 1 win and i think they'd need a ton of help. Several bubble teams didn't fair so well in their first game of the week (ole miss and Kentucky being 2 of them)

Some of the conference projections are a joke though. Pac 12 and A-10 should not be getting 5 teams in the tourney. And the Big East is top heavy this year. They should not get 8 teams in over the B1G getting 8 in.
