  • Just an interesting observation...with Illinois, Minnesota and Iowa all tied for 6th at 6-7 in conference, an Iowa win vs Nebby, Minny loss at OSU, and Illinois splits vs PSU and at Michigan, we could be in sole possession of 6th place in the B1G after Sunday's games.

    Just sayin...

That'd definitely be a nice position for Iowa to be in. The key is to just keep winning, and everything will then take care of itself.

Looking at the remaing schedules of these teams, it is likely that IA will end up ahead of those three teams + Purdue. Being a superstitious guy, I'm trying not to think of that very likely possibility and declare us NCAA bound -- sort of like Newt Gingrich being the likely Republican nominee for president as he so famously predicted. :) And I hope to God our young players are not looking at the schedule and taking their foot off the gas.

  • With the standings with the way they are now and going into the B1G Tourney; if Iowa finishes #6 our play in game would be #10 NW to play into MI. I think this is our best senario, if we can guard the 3 point. Plus they know we did not play MI that well plus they are in a down fall right now.

If Iowa finishes #7 we would have a play in game with NE to play MI St. This would be the next best, we did give MI St a run at home and we all know they could have won that game.

If we finish #8 we would have a play in game w/ PSU to play IN, I am less enthused about this.

    Go Hawks'

  • I'm glad the Illinois game is at home. Carver has been rocking and they only have 2 road wins in the BIG this .season(Minny and Nebby) I think we win out except for at Indiana and end up 21-10 (10-8) in the B1G. I don't see how we could not make the Tourney with that record, especially if we win a game in the BIG Tourney.

Maybe wishful thinking a bit, but incredibly doable. This would all be a moot point if Iowa hadn't blown wins @ Minny, @Purdue, Home against MSU and @ Wisconsin. All games Iowa should have won if they hadn't tanked in the last 2 minutes. Iowa is about 8 minutes away this season from being 10-3 right now in the BIG and in the mix for a conference title. Crazy to think about.

I don't think there's any way Iowa doesn't make the NCAA Tournament at 10-8 with a win in the conference tourney. That would make it as close to a lock as you can get.

  • Yet exciting to think about next year becasue we have this exact team (except May of course) . all of those close games would be victories with one more year under this team's belt - IMHO

I completely agree with you. While the book on this year's team isn't anywhere near shut, there's a lot to be excited about heading into next season.

Just like you said, the thing that's hurt Iowa this year is losing close games. That's a common hurdle that young teams have to overcome, and that's one main reason I thought Iowa was still a year away from the NCAA Tournament heading into this season. No matter what happens the rest of the way this season, it would be reasonable to expect this team to begin pulling more of those close games out next season.

  • Definition of premature? This thread.

IMO, the Hawks will have to finish 19-12 and win at least two in the Big 10 tournament to have an outside shot of making the NCAA at 21-13.

Speaking of premature, is it just me or does anyone else giggle over the thought of having a "Jok Uthoff" rotation at shooting guard?

The article linked at the top of the thread just discusses how Iowa had improved its chances. It didn't guarantee anything or say it was locked up, so there wasn't anything premature about it.

Outside of winning the conference tourney, I think Iowa either needs to finish 10-8 in the conference, or finish 9-9 and make it to Sunday in Chicago in order to have a shot at the Big Dance. Both will be very challenging, but neither one is impossible.

  • Noticed that the Illini lost today and IF Iowa can right the ship and win
3 games at home, then knock-off #1 Indiana, this thing is no problem.

Jesting here.......Hawks can start the ascension to 20 wins in a
PAY BACK game with PurDon't on Wednesday nite.

Yours truly is planning on being at Carver Hawkeye to get the Hawks Nest fired up.
