Gold medals aren't really made of gold. They're made of sweat, determination, and a hard-to-find alloy called guts.

  • Going by freshman only, I would have a hard time choosing that

15 National Championships and one Urban Meyer heart attack, Roll Tide. 23 NC's in wrestling and one badass Herky, Go Hawks.

Not sure what you mean. The article was focusing on incoming recruits for the 2013 season, so Powell would qualify for that.

If it were high school signees only, I would probably pick LeShun Daniels, Solomon Warfield or Malik Rucker.

Powel gets it IMO opinion but if he wasn't a JUCO transfer and just coming out of highschool I wouldn't pick him. The JUCO part gives that easement with the pick that he earned that much more awareness & is ready.

I know what the original OP was getting at, any new imcoming impact recruit. I was just implying if the JUCO wasn't an option I'd have a hard time picking a true freshman candidate.

You say Daniels for example. I thought so as well than I remembered how much KF loves walkon stories and his fear of sharing the rock so I figure we'll run Weisman like a rented mule before LeShun touches the rock for the powerback position. By impact I'm not talking KO coverage and since I don't see Law or Miller losing their spot due to previous years of seniority usually winning out I couldn't pick Warfeild or Rucker unless Rucker wins the KR battle which also in my mind will be tough since I feel like Cotton has the one spot locked & there are a ton of candidates.

Hence Id have a tough choice to pick ONE true freshman recruit impact player.

  • Historically, the Big 10's not been big on JUCOs so it's interesting that 5 of Wiltfong's 12 "impact players" are JUCOs. I can't help but wonder if this is a sign that's something changing? Illinois took 6. Even Ohio State signed one.

While I don't think any B1G programs typically take a lot of junior college players, outside of Michigan and Northwestern, the current coaching staffs at each school have been open to doing so - some more than others. In terms of making an instant impact, those guys would generally be a good candidate for that because they're older, more physically mature and have played at a higher level, so they're more likely to be able to start or play a lot right away. Also, when schools sign a junior college player, it's usually an indication that they've identified a major need at that position, and aren't completely convinced that the current players on the roster can fill that need.
