A lot of people are looking forward to Iowa basketball this season and that includes those wearing the black and gold themselves.
It was hard not to note the optimism in the faces and voices of Fran McCaffery's Hawkeyes as they met with members of the media inside the team's practice facility Thursday afternoon in Iowa City. McCaffery's third Hawkeye team is expected to be his best on the heels of an NIT appearance last season and both coach and players are fine with the high expectations that the team is facing.
"It's going to be an interesting team to try to figure out how everybody's going to fit," McCaffery said.
The team loses Bryce Cartwright and Matt Gatens, Iowa's leading scorer, but brings in one of the brightest recruiting classes the Hawks have landed in years. Headlining the group are big man Adam Woodbury and point guard Mike Gesell.
“These guys, they’re not afraid of (the expectations)," McCaffery said. "They’re not afraid of any part of it.”
Iowa opens the season Nov. 9 against Texas-Pan American but fans can get an early look at the team during the rejuvenated Black and Gold Blowout the night before the Penn State football game (Friday, Oct. 19). Tickets are $5.
Here are a handful of videos I shot this afternoon before needing to leave. I'll have more thoughts from media day coming later, perhaps late Friday morning or early in the afternoon.
