Kenney discusses Hawkeye Tailgate

David Kenney

David Kenney had a chance to spend extended time with his future teammates at the Hawkeye Tailgate. Click inside for his thoughts on the bond between the 2013 commits.

    • Sounds like David is no longer on the fence at all.....good to see.

    • One thing I wonder is how it would work in the event that Iowa only has 4-5 commits at that stage of the cycle in a given year. And especially so if those commits either live too far away to attend or just can't make it for whatever reason (for example, Ohio high schools started official practice the next morning, so Gressel, Welsh and Warfield couldn't make it). Does the success of an event like this rely on there already being a high number of commits on board?

Actually, it probably works better for Iowa if they can get just the same amount of recruits to show up, but have less of them be commitments. Then, it becomes an event where uncommitted players use it to make their final decision.

In the future they should hold the event a week earlier before Ohio practices start.

Great point about possibly being able to land commitments at that event. My understanding was that only the commits and a select few uncommitted prospects were invited this year. I would assume that if less prospects have committed, then more uncommitted prospects would be invited. As long as Iowa can get a good turnout, that could actually be even more beneficial. Thanks for bringing that up.

It'll be interesting to see if the Hawkeyes move it up a week. I think most college coaching staffs are on vacation the week before, but it may be possible for Iowa to restructure that. There are still some camps and premier combines going on the week before, but if you think about it, there will always be some sort of conflict no matter when you hold it.
