"Berkley (told me) he knows how Iowa wants to use him, but he’d like to see how the offense is going to work, and he wants to make sure that whichever running backs came in in 2012 don’t make All-B1G. That’s not a deal-breaker, but that’s one of the things he wants to see.”
He's worried about competition. That is sort of lame. I know every back probably looks at those things, but to tell someone publically is surprising. There is competition everywhere.

I don't think it's that. It's more along the lines of him wanting a fair shake at winning the job. Let's say, theoretically, Vandenberg had gotten hurt last summer and was out for the entire 2011 season, forcing Jake Rudock to start. Now let's say Rudock starts every game, passes for 3,000+ yards and earns All-B1G honors as a true freshman. No matter how competitive a recruit is, it would have been very difficult for Iowa to land a top 2012 quarterback in that situation. Coaches can talk all they want about the best man winning the job, but it's still an uphill battle to beat out a player that does that well as a true freshman. And if the recruit has other options with a more direct line up the depth chart, why not explore those?
